Description
Solo ingles/ENG only.Ok, so some days ago Screw Attack released a new death battle between Shadow and Mewtwo wich you can watch here www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4czQ1… (I'll recomend watching it before reading this)...and oh boy, it's the first battle of this show that managed to dissapoint me a lot.
Before an unnecesary rant starts, im not here to discuss why I think Shadow should have won since overall none of this is cannon and my problem doesn't involve the result, so, if you wanna discuss the outcome I recommend you to close this window since I won't talk too much about it, my main focus will be the fight itself.
So, when this battle was announced to be honest I was really hyped, it was a promising idea and the fact that these two characters had a lot to offer most people though this clash was going to be epic, but, in a nutshell the fight was lame. Shadow was out of character, they mixed 3 Mewtwo's into one wich doesn't make sense (it's confirmed that the first movie Mewtwo and the Genesect movie one are not the same character and taking traits from the manga was not valid due to being a different version of the character) and overall, it seems it focused more on keeping up the ''edgy'' jokes about Shadow and it was lazy and one-sided and it's inconclusive, since they didn't really answer who's stronger, they straight up used the cheap way saying that the Pokemon could win against the black hedgehog by simply erasing his memories...something that doesn't quite fit with muscle memory.
One of the reasons I follow this show is simply because of the fights, since they always find a way to make them epic, entertaining and unpredictable (heck, I enjoyed Knuckles vs DK, Megaman vs Astro Boy and Goku vs Superman and in all of them the characters I support died) but, since the Hypergauge team leaved, the 2D battles suffered a quality drop and this battle is the greatest example of that. I know the animator is a human being like anyone of us and that job is not easy (animation can be really time consuming and I know that because I tried it and it wasn't really succesfull) but, sprite animation is known for it's great diversity, practical and easy use for those who can't draw in order to animate, and it can be twice as fast than traditional animation since it's not necessary to draw anything in these ones. The animator could have done a lot on this fight and he could have asked for more time instead of rushing the project, for example, Mewtwo could have used Disable instead of mind control, Shadow Ball, Aura Sphere, Telekinesis on rocks or other objects, etc. Shadow fighting style consists on aggresive assaults, thus he regulary tends to not give his opponents a chance to attack via spamming Chaos Control powers and teleportation to have a huge advantage. Overall both their transformations were also wasted since we barely saw anything between Super Shadow and Mega Mewtwo, it literally was ''Omg im glowing!. Why am I glowing!?'', so yeah...a lot was missing here.
Overall it's kinda sad seeing how 2D fights on this show were great and they are starting to fall on the shadow of 3D ones and a great clash between two ultimate life forms was wasted by lazyness...but. Can we really blame them? Despite not being biased, the crew on Screw Attack has shown a great dislike on Shadow (this can be seen on Goku vs Superman and even here, since they called him ''Edgelord'', he was out of character and Mewtwo regarded him as ''Black, red and extremely annoying'' while he kinda conservated his personality) and obviously that would affect their work, because no matter how much neutral you are, when you work with something you don't like, at some point lazyness and uninterest will come and effort will slowly dissapear. Anyway...I hope DB 2D fights can recover some quality with new animators since I really love Screw Attack and I don't want to see one of their show greatest features dissapear.
Before anyone comments I want to make clear that I don't want to start a rant and I respect everyone opinions, but, I just had to talk about this since I felt it just needed to, anyway, I guess that's it, thanks for reading.
/////EDIT/////
The animator explained why the death battle was so bad and he had good reasons that makes sense, you can see them right here www.deviantart.com/journal/Abo…

I’m from the future and I’m here to tell you that Shadow wins for the very first time since many years of losing.

Dimension-Dino 's written battle is better IMO. And those who say otherwise can take their case with her .

Yeah, I agree but to be honest? I think it's beating a dead horse at this point, at least I don't care about that match anymore and I pretty much prefer to pretend it never happened.

Don't worry, Shadow, we all will still bow our heads low and hail you ! Biased fights mean nothing to us! You'll still obliterate everything that's not your friend! When there's nothing left to lose, you win!
P.S. By the way, what was in this journal? It is no longer present.

The journal explained why the fight was so lackluster. The animator of that fight didn't have motivation to begin with since he just wanted to end his contract with Screw Attack and work on other stuff, on top of that he had to animate the fight while suffering from very uncomfortable weather.
While it doesn't justify the crappy execution (since someone had to write Shadow saying ''Why am I glowing!?'') in retrospective it becomes a lot more understandable why the battle was so underwhelming.

I agree with you about the battle being lame, but I don't think it has anything to do with ScrewAttack (supposedly) not liking Shadow, and more to do with how they went about the fight. They used Shadow straight from the games and put him against 4 different versions of Mewtwo combined into one, which it always irks me when the combine multiple versions of the same character all into one (Superman, Knuckles, etc.). Couple that with an animator who didn't even want to animate that fight and the result is what we got. Here's to hoping Carolina V.S The Meta will be better (which I'm confident it will since it has Torrian is animating, and SA are getting their information directly from the creators of the characters).

I guess it has to do since dislike can always affect the research, not because of biased thinking, but because of how dificult it can be to stay neutral there. I think that using those Mewtwos into one would be the same as mixing Shadow with his archie comics counterpart, in Pokemon it's more than stated that the games, anime and manga universes are different and that they are not the same (Ash is actually supposed to be Red's anime counterpart and there's a lot of difference), they should have used one version of the character (mostly since in the anime there are 2 Mewtwos, the one from the first movie and the Genesect movie one).
And to be honest, I really feel bad by the bad luck this battle had by the animator lack of will and the lazy judgement, but hey, let's hope the next DB is better (I don't watch RVB but I hope it's better since it will be in 3D, it will be more entertaining)

I see where you're coming from, and I say they should've used Anime Mewtwo and Archie Shadow since those two are the most powerful versions of the characters out there. Also, if the fight is anything the fight scenes in RvB than we're definitely in for a good one.

rollflasher In reply to Dounuts1998 [2016-07-05 13:40:02 +0000 UTC]
Well I guess they should have only used their game versions since it depens on how cannon they are (Archie Sonic comics unfortunately are not cannon to the game universe as Sonic Boom as well and I have doubts about the anime and manga cannon in Pokemon games). Anyway, let's hope it's a good one

The problem with using the game Mewtwo is that it would be to difficult to predict an outcome for the battle. We also wouldn't have any major feats that Mewtwo accomplished since every time he appears in the game he never has any plot relevance. On top of that, it would be very one-sided since game Mewtwo could only have four moves at a time. The best measure we'd get of game Mewtwo's strength would be in Pokemon Origins (since it's a accurate game version of the anime), and even then we only saw him go against other Pokemon, which shows he's strongest Gen 1 Pokemon, but not really much else.

Well like the Super form ring rule, I think the 4 move rule can be ignored as it sometimes can get ridiculous (like. How can a Pokemon forget how to scratch or bite?) And talking about the games, I had a problem with Mestwo erasing Shadow's memories and instantly winning since. How does it come he never use that when trainers prove to be able to catch him? Red is actually an example since in Pokemon Origins, Mega Charizard X was beating up Mewtwo and then, he didn't make Red forget what he was doing.

Actually me, I have a lot of reasons to state why Shadow would have won but, my opinion doesn't matter, nor Screw Attack's or everyone's who's not Sega or Game Freak, again, the problem was the fight but the animator himself as already answered that so I guess it would be best to take it with humor and not discuss it any further
