I have a lot of trouble with the Magic Wand. Is there a particular trick to it? The thing enjoys selecting things I don't want it to.

adjust the tolerance, it maybe to high.... truthfully its not the best tool it takes some getting used to.
for example it maybe on 30 and selecting too much, drop it to 10, if its at 10 drop it to 5.
if you are using the wand with "add" then when u hold CTRL it will subtract, just letting u know this incase u didnt, it speeds things up when its selecting shit you dont want it tol.
also if u have CS4 take advantage of the Quick Selection tool, it maybe on CS3 as well.

Ah, i see. I use to be addicted to windows blinds. The easy is often the best, learning to make good use of curves and levels is very good.

Yes, smart sharpen is much better. Just noticed a deviant speaking about it here.

smart sharpen better than unsharpen. less halo's, more precise sharpening... any noise is less grainy and more powdery.
also smart sharpen lets you work on highlights and shadows separately.

instead of "selecting the sky" with magic wand, it might be easier to just use layer masks because then you can really fine tune adjust the outcome.

i hate and refuse to use layer masks.
and when you use the selection tool and apply an adjustment layer it creates a layermask, people should use the method they are most comfortable with i agree.

Nice tut I like the fact that your workflow is nondestructive. But wouldn't the quick selection tool (CS3) be quicker than the magic wand for this type of image??

Rom3o In reply to Jase036 [2008-08-05 12:39:00 +0000 UTC]
a lot of people dont use cs3, but in my case ive been using cs 1 and 2 so long i refuse to use anything other then what i know well, but like i said use which ever your most comfortable with
