EDIT! THIS IS OLD! AND I AM RE DOING IT WITH A MORE ACCURATE INFORMATION AND BETTER ANATOMY, AS WELL AS A BETTER AND POLITE DESCRIPTION, don't worry, this is reaaaaaaaally old, I am re doing the scars cliches guide too, dont even bother reading this DxWHAT I TYPED DOWN THERE MIGHT INSULT YOUR OCS, I WARNED YOU GUYS
IMPORTANT
Remember that this guide was built by dA users(As suggested ideas), it is what mostly everyone think about them, before posting anything harmful, I warn you that some cliches are somehow mean, while some are true, some can be untrue as well, it depends on the way you think toward them. If your story has one or several of them, that does not disqualifies your story as bad or overused story, also remember that not everything in this world is 100% accurate, and there is Artists that add strangeness to their styles which makes them unique in some way, sorry if anything down this insults your style.
Purpose
The purpose of making this guide is to help those who are trying to avoid cliches of any kind releated to wolf series.
I hope this helps you out! =Roneri
First of all, a wolf is a wolf, nothing with orange markings, red black pelts with tribal markings or manes, even adding a simple tribal marking to a wolf will cause it to be eliminated of a ''wolf species'' oc, this applys to felines, equines and even humans.(it also depends on the wolf subspecies) why do you guys call your ocs just a ''wolf?'' theres nothing as such a wolf, it must be either a Grey wolf, ethiopian wolf and such!
First, what's a grey wolf coat color?
Coat colour ranges from almost pure white through various shades of blond, cream, and ochre to grays, browns, and blacks. Variation in fur color tends to increase in higher latitudes. Differences in coat colour between sexes are largely absent, though females may have redder tones. Fur color doesn't seem to serve any camouflage purpose, with some experts concluding that the blended colors have more to do with emphasizing certain gestures during interaction. Black coloured wolves (which occur through wolf-dog hybridisation) rarely occur in Eurasia, where interactions with domestic dogs have been reduced over the past thousand years due to the depletion of wild wolf populations. Black specimens are more common in North America, with about half the wolves in Yellowstone National Park being blackWikipedia
Even adding a single unatural marking disqualifies your ''wolf'' character, manes, wings, exta fur and such.
This is a rule I myself fail to show, however I do believe this is correct!
A wolf is an animal that has lived a long time here, its coat has stayed the same, theres NO green canines, NO blue striped canines NO winged canines, therefore your OCs are not ''wolves'' they are your own species or either hybrids.
When someone creates a wolf character do they even bother to look for the anatomy? for how it should look IRL?
How on earth is a wolf (or canidae species) a color red by the fault(pelt) with wings and mane? is a wolf that? no. even shiny eyes? blue eyes? natural wolves DONT have any other eye color besides yellow-green and brown tones that can go to orange, NO purple, NO blue and definitely NO RED.((of course with the cause of albiness that causes greish with blue tones.)
If you guys dont know at which your oc resambles, then state is as own creation, you cant just go saying its a wolf because wolves are not like that in the wild.
''ITS MY OC MY IMAGINATION, MY CHARACTER MY WORLD!'' then why call it a wolf if they dont belong to you? wolves already exist.
Now lets go to anatomy, I have seen some people giving this ''wolf'' ocs short bodies, really long tails, fluffy, extra dewclaws in each paws(backs too) fail fangs anatomy and super kawaii desu eyes.
I know ''Its my style'' but still thats NOT a wolf.
Drawing anatomy problems
The following described information contains mistakes from the first image.
1-A common mistake is giving them manes or fluffy foreheads, tufts and such.
2-Big fox like ears, an often mistake done by a lot of dA users.
3-Really fluffy chests, aparently the chest fur is the longests besides the tail fur in the whole body making them look ''bad ass''
4-Super fluffy neck, a ''mane'' that makes them look bigger and bad ass, oftenly mistaken, usually the hair grows to the head direction instead of growing straight.
5-Paws without claws, Cat paws? dafuq? a canine cant retract its claws.
6-Super skinny oh bby! dafuq? some users draw them supper skinny and without showing parts of they ribs, like they were never there and yet the character is capable of taking down a bisont.
7-The small leg problem, a lot of users does them, they draw the leg that is on the oposite picture smaller, the ankle is lower than the leg shownd infront, to avoid this picture, imagine watching the picture from the other side and the opposite leg from the correct side. you will see that the knee is placed in a certain distance from the belly, therefore try to draw the opposite leg as the front one, also the ankle should NEVER be smaller than the opposite ankle.
8-Those Crane legs, SRLY? do people even bother to study anatomy before drawing? the ankle should be lower than the front leg's elbow, also I have seen a lot of people giving the characters those muscular like human elbows, they dont look good bro.
9-Those fluffy tails that are as large as the body, take a look at the second image, a wolf's tail is short and fluffy with short and a souble coat fur. not straight fur all the way down its tail. something about 9 is that some people dont bother to draw the markings good, as like they only marke the stripes, take a look at where the fur starts and ends in the tail, is that even correct? were is the fur?
10-For the last, The nose, some people give them rectangular(100%) noses or even feline noses like, they also forget to draw its whiskers(lol forgot to add in the second picture XD) and usually give them square and short muzzles.
Like I said I fail to apply the first rule to myself, but I believe its right! X_x also if I typed something wrong, let me know! Remember that I am not perfect in Anatomy! so imagen 2 might have some problems.
EDIT:
''xD oh haha now I see, you were aiming this more towards people claiming their OCs to be real wolves, not fantasy wolves'' Posted by ~Panterabytes
Exactly! This is what I'm trying to say.

hmmm... I know this is totally true, wee tend to stylize wolves a bit too much! I do it myself I just can't help it I have a realy cartoony fantasy style and I like it, but if they give me a relistic ref sheet for a commission I would totally draw it like this (the second picture) with propper anatumy, fur direction and length, etc.
I see your poit and I support it but not to any extreme.
I try to follow a breed's or species' anatomy and stylize them at the same time! and it also helps a lot when trying to improve anatomy

I don't know if this was addressed yet, but I know how you said something along that lines of "... natural wolves don't have blue eyes..." That is true, but I just wanted to add there have been cases of wolves with blue eyes, but they happen to be products of incest. So no, they don't occur "naturally," per se, but they do happen. Most often in captivity since obviously there's more variety to the gene pool in the wild.

I am aware of that, genetical problems and albinism, it happens in a lot of animals.

Nice, although I should add (too lazy to flip through all 100+ comments) that wolves can have blue eyes even into adulthood, although it is extremely rare.

this is what I intended to say in the first place, when you put them accesories and give them unnatural colors and such It no longer is a wolf, its a fantasy wolf however

I'm so glad my wolf oc/persona is NOT a sparkle dog. It's a normal colored, anatomically correct wolf. I did it on purpose. No regrets. haha

Lol, I don't have MANY "Wolf" ocs with unatural FUR color (My fursona has accurate fur color, just her markings are almost impossible to be on a wolf, and she's not even a wolf, not because of her eyes or markings or wings.) But not all people with 'wolf' ocs draw them with horrid anatomy.
My anatomy is very good (if I do say so myself) and I draw wolves, so. XD
Whatevs, allot of people do draw the top wolf that way, so the picture is very true. (I didn't really read the whole description )

I do believe that some of which you listed might be stylizing. Adding manes in with your style and making proportions interesting can differentiate your wolf characters.

ok my OC might have a redDISH BROWN mask on her face you can see on my icon but shes a girl and she is a
maned wolf/culpeo fox cross (they are closely related) and that's the only unnatural thing about her the red mask her stripes were from if you ever see a culpeo foxes back they have a black back with silvery gray around the black and my OC has the same expect the black stretched to form stripes
long explation short
MY FURSONA IS A REAL MANED WOLF BUT WITH A FEW UNIQUE DESIGNS THAT COULD BE REAL
