Description
Gumbo Flats (now known as Chesterfield Valley) Missouri, 2001.During the flood of 1993, the 100 year levee broke and the Chesterfield Valley was flooded. This house was damaged, but the owners repaired and rebuilt and moved back in.
Since then a 500 year levee has been built (much to the annoyance of the people who live on the other side of the river).
From what I understand, there has been a deal that property owners no longer have to buy flood insurance in this area, and should the area flood again, the tax payers will have to foot the repair bill.
Land developers, who were forewarned of this development, were able to buy the land cheaply and then turn around and make a fortune from selling or leasing newly built construction.
Note the mailbox on the ground next to the front door. I believe that this house (largely intact) was bulldozed later the same year as this picture.
Scanned from a 35mm print.
