Description
The Galena Mining & Historical Museum on Route 66 in Galena Kansas, September 2015.After much searching on the Internet, I finally found a German website www.alex-aroundtheworld.com/Ro… that mentioned the year that this was built. I will quote the English translation, "Formerly Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (M-K-T), victorian style, Katy Depot (1900-1983), was moved from Main Street to West 7th Street. It is situated now in the 1984 Historical Museum at 319 West 7th Street in Galena."
The city of Galena is named after a type of lead ore that is found in the area. It was first named Short Creek and then later briefly Bonanza, but got its current name in 1877. Currently has a population of about 3,000, but in 1900 the census count was 10,155 (several sources on the Internet quote "over 30,000" but they don't list when that was and it is not reflected in the census reports) . The last of the mines closed in the 1970's.
Galena was once served by three different railroads at the same time, the Fort Scott and Gulf Railroad, the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway (SLSF or Frisco) and the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad (MKT or KATY). Currently the area is only served by the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway (BNSF).
