Description
Trying to come up with not so literal titles...It took me so long to get these colors, so long.
Well hopefully here's some nostalgia for you.
Does anyone else like Emerald Hill's 2P racing mode music more than the original?

I'm not sure if I commented on this already, but I love this picture. Β Not only it is crazy colorful and has something going on even in the background far off in the distance, but it also catches the feel of the video game and the nostalgia.

It looks absolutely gorgeous. Man, I'm jealous...
Every single detail down to perfection, the shading and the colours, oh how vibrant they are! The colours really make the image pop and the variety makes this picture a true masterpiece.
Very, very well done.

Thanks man. Β Yeah, layering atmospheric-perspective-esque things in the far background is really fun as well!

I wish I could offer something constructive but this is sooo nice! I especially love the bright colors and even though there's a lot of detail it evokes a simplistic feel. And yes I do like the 2P music a lot but kinda hate playing the 2P stages lol

Holy cow... I'd just happened to be looking through my past artwork and saw your comment here, without a reply from me! Β I'm so sorry, I must have accidentally deleted it from my messages those 10 months ago!!! (or else deviantart glitched out)Β
That aside... thank you so much! Β That's really interesting, what you said, that despite the detail it evokes a simplistic feel. Β Now that I look at it again, it's true! Β You don't like playing to 2 player stages?

dollphinwing In reply to rontufox [2013-12-31 05:29:56 +0000 UTC]
haha that's ok, happens to me too sometimes
I just don't really like the stages cuz the laps seem kinda short and then the obstacles can get really annoying especially when you're busy chewing out you're opponent and then get stuck XD

How do you come up with these backgrounds? They're so lively!
I really like how you made the flowers and the grass, but most of all, I love that bush in bottom-right corner. For some reason, they always stick out to me in the game and it's really nice to know that someone else notice them, too!

Nothing will increase your sense of dynamic environments better than referencing insanely amazing speedpaint artists. Here's some of what I was looking at back when I was doing stuff like this: [link] (I have more among my favorites but that page shows the most concentrated amounts ).
The most important things I learned from those are layer layer layer elements behind each other to create dynamic shapes and to be able to exaggerated atmospheric perspective, and also to choose a sweeping motion for the environment to take. As in, just because the environment is horizontal, doesn't mean the shapes should be horizontal (like how I made the hills slope and sweep at a variety of angles). I hope that helps! I had a really tough time when I first dove into environments, so I wanna share with people what I learned so they can get the hang of it faster than I did!
Thanks! I always loved those bushes so I wanted to make it in the foreground

That information was a real life saver! You see, I'm in the process of doing another scenery/fan zone picture and it would've looked really bland and straightforward had you not told me this. I might do an original picture afterwards just to further apply these tips. Thanks a lot!

That's awesome! It's great when something you learned helps someone else! (especially if it was difficult to figure out) I'll be on the look out for those environments Also, yes, I'd encourage doing some original scene things, even just color sketches, I know I did a lotta that! I also did a lot of eyedropper tool on those speedpaint references to figure out how the heck they manage atmospheric perspective.

The thing that really gets me looking at this now is the flowers in the foreground and how wonderfully jelly-like they are, like I could almost see them bobbing and undulating like a jellyfish. I don't remember if the flowers in Emerald Hill animated like the ones in the GHZ did, but I can see it now. xD

I never looked at them that way, but you're right. I wish I had thought of that while I was doing it, I could've played the bobbing jelly flowers even more!
