Description
Trying to come up with not so literal titles...It took me so long to get these colors, so long.
Well hopefully here's some nostalgia for you.
Does anyone else like Emerald Hill's 2P racing mode music more than the original?

Oh yeah, the colors are definitely what drew me to this piece.
The only concrit i have for you is about the rings. You put so much detail into everything yet you didnt put that shine in the rings! Otherwise it looks amazing, because I really had to search for something to crit you on ^ ^

Oh geez, I didn't shade the rings at all did I? I usually don't fix mistakes that come to my attention after I've finished, but that's gonna bother me so much if I don't. Thanks so much for pointing that out! Putting shadows and shines on those rings will definitely make it look better.
Thanks!

Haha no problem! Ya know, I don't usually go back to fix my art either if it's a small thing, but it's a good habit to do so... even if I'm too lazy... <:9
I'll be around to refave the new version if applicable!

Ugh, I regret to admit that I tried to improve the rings, but couldn't get them to work. White for shines don't show up against the yellow, and making the rings any darker makes them disappear against the blue sky behind them. Just thought I'd let you know so you're not wondering why I haven't updated it yet

ohh!? yesh that does pose a problem...
well! i dont think that the yellow is so light that white wouldnt show up on it? but if so, then maybe you could darken the rings with some yellow-orange to give them shading instead of adding brightness? You don't have to do it, but it's just a suggestion.
Awesome that you tried.

rontufox In reply to thewrabbithole [2011-09-13 23:19:43 +0000 UTC]
I think the white won't show only because the rings are so small, there's hardly space for the eye to differentiate I suspect if this were bigger, I could put shines on the rings, even without darkening them beforehand, and they'd probably show up.
I tried making them more yellow-orange as well, but even just slightly darker makes them blend into the background and when I darkened them even more to make them stand out from the background, a weird effect glowing/vibrating effect went on between the ring and background since they're complimentary colors, kinda making the rings look all trippy (not in a good way lol). So I guess I'll leave it as is, it's sorta perplexing

ahh okayy lol. They're trippy?! I wonder what that's like?! Well, what part of sonic wasn't trippy to begin with? haha
Well, we learned something as artists today, didn't we? At least you went back to try and fix it, right?

Yeah, haha. I was actually looking forward to updating this deviation and saying how cool I made the rings look... Ah well. Thanks for the suggestion still! I do think the rings could look better, but with that background I guess I'm stuck for now.

The colors, Duke! The colors!
When you say it took a long time to get the colors, I'm curious, do you spend a while picking them out beforehand or did you use some layers and PS-type effects to tweak it into this state? (Or did you just repaint over and over? xD)

rontufox In reply to gsilverfish [2011-09-10 03:26:30 +0000 UTC]
Kinda a combination of all of the above, haha. The hue/saturation, color balance, and level tools in photoshop are all extremely helpful for me, but more than that I sorta "glaze" crazy colors over areas I've already painted to get it even more colorful and saturated. Like for the palm tree, I wanted the shadows to be very purple/pink, so I painted obnoxious purples over the orange and then used the "fade brush" tool to fade the color I just put down so the original orange showed through and sorta mixed, I guess. Yeah, that fade brush tool is what I use the most, now that I think about it.

Like, what the heck this thing didn't show up in my inbox again! Deviantart is middle fingering me
You know, I seriosly wish I could say something about this, but I can't I absolutely adore your bright and fun color scheme, it works super duper awesomely well with the Sonic atmosphere, being super colorful and full of life
I remember those backrounds you did I was really sad when you told me you weren't planning on using those backrounds for anything, they were so cool I think my favorite part about this is the angle you chose, since this kind of POV allows attention to detail, and a wide open space to work with, and it definitely played out well here
I'm so super jealous
I'd comment about how the brighness can be a bit hard on the eyes, but fortunately, my eyes are trained to look at super bright things

Well I only posted it today, so you didn't miss it by much. But it's really stupid how that's happening, I hope I'm not missing people's deviations too...
Haha, I lol'd at your last sentence! Actually, as I kept pushing the color brightness and saturation, I kept hoping I wasn't going overboard. Hopefully it's not too overwhelming to those not trained like us...
And thanks for all the feedback about the background! I'm really starting to get a passion for pushing bright, cheery, saturated colors. I just really enjoy the look, and like you said, I think it fits the Sonic atmosphere (at least what I've always seen it to be). The most appealing thing about the Genesis games, for me, was actually the backgrounds... I hardly cared about gameplay at all, to me the heart and soul of Sonic was the fantastical pinball-esque environments. Anyway, my point is, I'm glad you think it fits cuz that's important to me

Aw, your welcome
I wouldn't worry too much about the brightness, it is your art after all
Bright colors have always been the most fun to work with, glad to hear you love them so much I think the same way about the Genesis games, its really fun to try to look at the details in the backrounds and such, and try to figure out what they are, since some of them can be a bit strange

I know, years and years later, every time I blow the dust off my Genesis and play some old Sonic game, I notice environment details I never realized before. Those designers were freaking geniuses.
