It's getting old, I know, but this "running gag" from the CGI Sharon Miller era still gets on my nerves at times. It doesn't ruin the episode for me at all, but it's been done to death. Drivers, Firemen and various Workmen are still as silent as Red from PokΓ©mon. But really, the good things of an episode do over-weigh the things I dislike in the episode, such as this. I'm sure Brenner's slowly getting there by slowly moving on and back to the true classic writing roots where an engine's crew can speak again and don't just act like their "hands".Related content

I have the slightest feeling that the driver and fireman will have dialogue following series 18. Because they're not in the backround.
E.G in No snow for Thomas. We heard that Thomas played a cheeky trick on his driver, and we saw him TWICE!
P.S has anyone noticed they've started selling take n play toys of Donald and Douglas and i'm pretty sure everyone here knows what that means 8D

Just because there's a new version of toy of an old character doesn't mean they'll make a comeback, though I'm sure it's possible that Donald and Douglas will make a comeback soon but it's early days yet. Sure Duck was released this year by Bachmann but no one knew he was to make a comeback and plus it was made due to fan service. They're re-releasing a patch work Hiro for the TnP range this year and that is of course not coming back in the show.Β

It doesn't seem like a running gag when you're taking a whole story element out of something.
A running gag is like.. A Β lady with a big ass hat in the background at a station in every episode. Or a mystery engine that occasionally photobombs a scene.

At least the crews have been expressing emotion, albeit silently. I mean, lookit Charlie's crew in Not Now Charlie. They were like "The Hell is this thing doing here? Hey, lookit this!"
