Thunder rumbled overhead in the distance, much louder and closer than it looked based upon the darkening clouds overhead. The dirt was still soft from the misty morning, making the horse tracks in the ground deep and obvious.

Arianna had found herself in an unfortunate series of situations. She’d moved out from her parents’ home, and within the year the house she’d bought had fallen apart so much it’d had to be torn down and rebuilt. Wild canines- whether it was coyotes, wolves, or just wild abandoned dogs- she didn’t which, had gotten to her chicken and sheep and murdered the whole lot. Rebuilding her house had taken all of her savings, leaving her with just enough to get by. The most recent assault to her lifestyle had been horse thieves. These horses were meant to be the majority of her livelihood between breeding, competing, and sales. She’d had five champions, and two high-potential foals. All gone. Sure, she could return to her parents, a failure worse off than before, but that would never fix her tattered pride.

She was two months into tracking down the stolen herd when she’d found a roan stallion out in the wilds. The shredded black and red tack on his back, the rips into his hide that were slowly healing spoke of an accident that no bandit or wolf could do. The lacerations were too deep for a wolf, and too crooked for a sword or spear. The stallion’s mane was still shoddily roached. It took her a solid two weeks to earn the stallion’s trust enough to remove the torn tack and tend to his wounds. She kept the bridle, but sold the remains of the saddle - keeping a piece of the blanket that had an unfamiliar symbol on it. The thieves had been through the town as well. Arianna had asked around, describing two of the horses she was looking for, they’d passed through with the whole herd several days ago- said something about heading towards a huge fair in the big ‘city’.
