Description Panel name:  Perspectives: From Basics to Advanced, in Ahwatukee B. 1-2pm on Saturday.

Another mini-tutorial handout for my 2nd panel at SabotenCon.  :3  Nothing is worse than trying to read a comic that lacks even basic backgrounds. It's like watching a stage play with no set. (Mind you, even a set-less stage has a floor, curtains, and ceiling).  Comics should not force the reader to figure out where the characters are in relation to each other or the world around them. Imagine reading a book that only describes actions and internal thoughts. What about the room? Is there a chair? A door? Are they outside in a forest or in the middle of a bustling traffic way?

A comic that doesn't have at least 1 background image per page is what I call... fluffy.  Without grounding a character, they might as well be floating in the sky among the clouds. Any strength or gravity the character might have is lost when they don't have something to stand on or next to.  As a comic book artist, you must draw the setting, just as an author must write it.

This is extremely helpful, thank you Roxy! I could also see this being used in literature too, especially for world building.

I haven't thought of it that way.  >.> It does sadden me when a book is flavorless when it comes to lack of setting.  I appreciated it when authors spend at least a few sentences describing where characters are.

Oh my gosh, that takes me back to my college drawing class... I never was that great at it, but more to the point, I never felt any desire to put in the effort that it took to get good results.

Great tutorial!

It's time consuming and tedious.  But I think it's worth it.  It's one of the least appreciated forms of art in a comic, but it makes a huge difference and bumps up the quality by leaps and bounds.

Without a doubt, you speak the truth.
