The remote control menu is cute, funny and a nice nod to the Arkhamverse. Could both versions of this piece mayhaps be made viewable? Just curious is all.

Does that mean Helena was 8-years-old when Bruce returned to Gotham?
That's definitely a different approach for Black Mask's backstory.
Had to look up the bit about her biological father. You sticking with Santo Cassamento, or are you trying to combine Helena Berinelli with Helena Wayne?
Also, I never asked, why are the VOX logs always so separate from the casefiles? Any particular reason?

Roysovitch In reply to nightcrawlerfan19 [2015-11-17 23:07:07 +0000 UTC]

Around 8 when Batman began, yes.
Yes, I wanted to give her an archnemesis and an alternative to Black Mask to where a mask other than it was burned to his face.
You'll have to tune in later to see if she finds her real dad. But yes, I am merging her with Helena Wayne a little.
The VOX were meant to just be one element I was going to do to make it look like Oracle was working in the background and just had these profiles on her desktop. The Vox became so popular I never introduced the other things I was going to do in place of the VOX Boxes.

But if Sionis is Helena's arch-nemesis, then who is Selina's?

Right now, I'd say Selina has the biggest issue with Hush.

Blockbuster.

Why not Slade?

Roysovitch In reply to drawntogetha4ever [2017-02-10 15:23:36 +0000 UTC]

Nightwing traditionally protects Bludhaven. Blockbuster is the biggest player in Bludhaven. Deathstroke is more of an antagonist to Batamn, Green Arrow, and the Titans... not so much to Nightwing specifically.

The reason I think that Slade is more like Dick's arch-nemesis, is because 1: How long they faced each other when Dick was with the Teen Titans. 2: He's had more of an impact than Blockbuster has. 3: To me, it feels like Slade reminds Dick of every reason he left Bruce's side. And seeing how he treats his own children only reminds him even more.

In Earth-27, the history of the Titans is much different. Deathstroke only faced Dick's generation of the Titans once (in the incident where Terra was "killed"). Deathstroke was much more prominent in Jason's run as Robin in the Titans. And yes, Deathstroke is a much more prominent villain than Blockbuster, but Blockbuster is the big bad of Bludhaven.

Anyway, Deathstroke is a big threat to most superheroes in general but Nightwing of Earth-27 doesn't have that much personal beef with him (other than he was thought to have "killed" Terra).

Not every one has an Arch-Nemesis.
You could argue that Batman's is Joker.
Calculator is Oracle's.
Blockbuster or the Court of Owls is Dick's.
The Light is Tim's.
Joker is Jason's.
The League of Assassins are Cassandra's.
And so forth.

I guess I'm just stuck to philosophy of "Every Great Hero Has to Have a Great Villain". I just feel like heroes are more complete as characters if they have someone who directly opposes them. Don't you agree?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Roysovitch In reply to drawntogetha4ever [2017-02-26 02:58:39 +0000 UTC]

I think the MCU and several Marvel and DC Heroes prove that philosophy as false.
Loki is the best villain in the MCU and the Thor movies are perhaps the weakest franchise in the MCU.
Also, characters like Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, Gambit, Iceman, Hawkeye, and more are great characters that lack arch-enemies. Sure, they all have enemies that are integral to key character developmwnt moments but they are not defined by a villlain.
No character should need another character to define them. Great characters can stand on their own, just like real people.
Conflict is what shapes great characters. Whether that conflict is internal, external, generated by an antagonist, or a combination of those factors.
Yes, having a villain that calls back to something within the hero is poetic, literary, and interesting but it is not necessary.

I like this version of Huntress. Mostly Pre-52 though that line about Franco Bertinelli not being her biological father makes me think of 52 version of Huntress. If Batman is her father, he would have been 17 when Helena was born.

Finally! I've been waiting for you to post this ^.^

I really love how you added Batman, Black Mask, The Falcones & The Maronis. And i love that you changed most of her backstory. I must say, your profiles are amazing!
But why does she have brown eyes? Last i can remember she had blue eyes.

Roysovitch In reply to GlassCandyboi [2015-11-17 20:23:46 +0000 UTC]

I gave a fuller explanation in a reply to another comment, but I'll give you the quick version.
In comics, I found her eyes change colors constantly, so I went with the brown eyed version from Justice League Unlimited which was really my first exposure to her that had any kind of impact on me. And I felt the brown eyes gave her a more Mediterranean look, which I felt fit her Sicilian heritage.

GlassCandyboi In reply to Roysovitch [2015-11-18 14:16:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh. I saw the comment. And yes, i also think it fits her Italian/Sicilian heritage too. Either way, she looks fantastic! It's such a shame how DC's portraying her in Grayson & other comics. WHY WONT THEY BRING THE OLD HEL B!
one question, who's her father? Are you going with Santo Cassamento? Or are you gonna make a whole new different character?

this. In E-27, she was 14 when her family was murdered as opposed to 8 or 9. Plus she has a reason to kneecap Black Mask. Couldn't tell you about the Vox, profile was more interesting.

One of my favourite Bat-characters with a beautiful illustration and a fascinating write-up so far. I will definitely be tuning back in for the rest of the story as I actually think I prefer this to the canon take and Huntress is awesome in all sorts of ways. I am also curious to see which versions of the costume you're using for inspiration.

One question though, if I may - why brown eyes and not blue?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Roysovitch In reply to Veherzak [2015-11-17 20:20:01 +0000 UTC]

Her eyes change colors so much in the comics (I found one where her eyes changes from green to brown to blue to green, all in a single issue) so I couldn't rely on the comics so much as a reference so I got looking at the rest of the Bat-Family and realized that so much of them have blue and green eyes... so I had Helena go with brown eyes. Plus, in Justice League Unlimited, her eyes were brown and that was really my first time that I ever remembered enjoying her character, so that's why I had Phil give her brown eyes.

Also, just let me say that Helena having brown eyes is not going to be the last color change you'll see with characters. I might be going off on a bit of a rant after I saw Phil's artwork and my take on these characters get ripped apart by ignorant commenters after someone uploaded the characters to 9gag, Pinterest, and Tumblr (so don't take this as intended toward you); but I don't just change those things for the hell of it (I spend a lot of time flipping through comic books and doing research online whenever I commission a character from Phil), I want to get the details right and when I do deliberately change something, it is because it's something that has always bothered me or as a means to make the character my own for the purposes of this series.

If I change something it is after deliberate action to do so. I used the female Copperhead because she is much cooler than the lame male version (IMO), I made Deadshot and Firefly black as I felt the villains' gallery was predominantly white and those two characters were ones whose race didn't seem crucial to their characters (there was also precedence for those changes with Will Smith, etc), and I did not like how the Bat-Family was littered with blue eyed characters with black hair (pictures of Bruce and his "sons" looked like WayneTech was dabbling in cloning science) so I chose to have Dick's hair made brown, use the red-headed version of Jason, and (you'll see soon) that Cassandra was given lighter hair and darker eyes (as is more common with mixed-race Asians, as opposed to her having black hair and blue eyes).

Anyway, sorry if that seemed excessive, but I needed to vent. I know your question was just about the eye color but it got me thinking about all this other stuff and I just wanted to let it all out. Thanks for your support and taking the time to leave a comment! I hope the rest of her story lives up to the expectations!

nightcrawlerfan19 In reply to Roysovitch [2015-11-17 23:00:14 +0000 UTC]

I like both the male and female Copperheads myself, but they're useful in different ways. Female Copperhead was designed as a Batman villain, while male Copperhead is a Superman villain. Much like black Nick Fury vs. white Nick Fury, the way they have been used has turned them into different characters, both of which have their uses.
I personally prefer the traditional versions of Deadshot and Firefly, as I love Floyd's "evil Errol Flynn" look and Firefly's white trash look from The Batman. But I get your reasoning, and it's not like those were without precedent.
Yeah, the Bat Boys can get a little weird. I much prefer red-head Jason. And I personally would've made Tim the brown-haired one, but that's just personal taste.
Interested to see how Cassandra turns out. Keep up the good work!

That's absolutely not a problem - no offence taken on my part at all. That was why I asked, actually, because I doubted you'd made that choice casually and I was curious about your reasoning. I think the chief reason I like her having blue eyes is that it reinforces the visual similarities between her and Bruce, which matches the thematic similarities quite well. That said, as you point out, there are a lot of blue-eyed and green-eyed members of the Bat-family - there is a reason for all the online jokes regarding Bruce and his sons in particular.

I'd actually like to thank you in advance for taking that route with Cass. Certainly, there is absolutely no reason for her to have the same colouring as the Robins. So, for what it's worth, I think that was an excellent choice. The same with the Origins Copperhead who is much more memorable than the original comics take. And anything to differentiate the Robins is a good thing, anything. Speaking personally, one of the things that is guaranteed to annoy me is when they all have exactly the same height, build and skill set. So, again, thank you for taking the time not just to reference the comics but also to improve on them instead of just following them slavishly.

In general, though, I think you've made excellent choices throughout whatever your criteria, both in terms of the commissions you've placed and the routes you've taken with their stories. I am really enjoying reading your bios and the artwork is, naturally, superb. So I have no doubts about the rest of Helena's story being as good as all the others.

The one character I may not trust myself to comment on is Stephanie Brown, because she is my favourite of the Bat-Family and I have a very particular image of her in my head having read as many of her comics as I can over the years. That said, I definitely have more faith in you than most writers so I will be awaiting that particular bio with baited breath. Please excuse the somewhat rambling reply, thank you for taking the time to fully answer my question and I look forward to more in this series.

No trouble - if you put this much time, effort and money into a project, I feel I ought to put at least some thought into my response.

And I definitely hope so too - if they aren't the same, I am at least sure that yours will be well-thought-out, consistent and interesting. If it isn't too presumptuous of me though, I would be very interested to discuss Steph with you at some point and our respective takes on her.
