Only in the comics as far as I know. I think thete may have been a character based off her in the old WW TV series though. This version is mostly original as far as her backstory

She is from a reality in which the DC trinity were Africanized(as far as I can tell)

Ladies and gentlemen, I love this character now. Why? Because between war and peace she tried both and stuck to the latter, and I find that admirable. I know being a pacifist isn't exactly the obvious choice in the superhero world but it's admirable when rather than just trying to punch your way out of a situation you actually try and make it better thus creating a path for everyone to leave. A civilisation cannot thrive on one skill, Nubia gave the amazons several and for that they have endured...that's beautiful. I wonder what Hippolyta has in mind?

Cool! But why is Hippolyta calling them all her daughters? Diana and Donna are her daughters, of course. But Nubia is roughly the same age as she is, since they both fought the Titans. And Requiem was a fully grown woman before they met.Β

And yes, I saw the part about Nubia and Requiem being declared as her 'daughters'. But isn't that a purely ceremonial position? I'm not doubting she cares for them, but I don't they'd have a mother-daughter relationship. But this VOX Box implies they do, given the way Hippolyta spoke.

Diana is the only biological daughter of Hippolyta.

Donna was the daughter of an Amazon who married Prince Hector of Troy so Hippolyta took Donna in as a sign of respect to her parents, granting her the honor of remaining a princess as was her birthright.

Nubia and Andraste were leaders of smaller Amazonian tribes, essentially cheiftesses, when they were assimilated into Themysciran culture. As an honor, they were granted adopted by Hippolyta.

The adoption of Donna, due to her age, was essentially authentic. The adoption of Nubia and Andraste was originally only ceremonial but over time it developed into a more familial one, due in great part to taking on sisterly roles with Diana and Donna and then coming to think of Hippolyta as a mother by extension of their sisterly relationship with the others.

You might not realize this, but there is a phenomena in gender-isolated environments, especially among females, where residents take on familial roles to create new family models. Often women in prison will actually create "family trees" where a couple may make themselves "father and mother" over others, looking over them and helping them as needed. This can be extended further if those "parents" have their "prisoner-parents" or the "children" take on parental responsibilities over a new arrival. The ages of the participants in these makeshift families are usually not important to their roles, instead being based more on maturity, time in the facility, and/or reputation.

I based this Amazonian tradition on this phenomena, but removed the 'male' identifying roles like father, son, etc as the Amazons would likely shun such titles. The reason for this was to make them feel like their own society, isolated from our world for thousands of years. Outside of the royal family, I see this practice also going on as Amazons would take under their wings or under their roof, especially in the early days of building Themyscira.

I hope that helps you understand the nature of this decision and the dynamics of the Amazon culture in Earth-27.

It does help a lot and it's very cool idea. Thank you.

Also, um, why is Diana in her 'Origins of the Trinity' outfit but Donna is in her Darkstar outfit?

I think Donna wouldn't have an outfit for Themyscria as it would probably remind her of her time as Wonder Girl...a time she wasn't too fond of.

Roysovitch In reply to Ian-Jackson [2016-10-08 07:33:32 +0000 UTC]

Since Diana doesn't really age, her origins costume doubles as her traditional Themysciran battle armor costume... so anytime she's back in Themyscira, she'll be dressed like this... usually.

Also, she's allowed to mix things up and dress how she likes. Also, fans seem to really like the Origins picture, so I'll probably be using it quite a bit for a while.

I'm sorry Donna and Artemis/Andraste, but Nubia is the hottest Amazon on Themyscria. I smiled and grinned while reading her profile. I'd definitely read any book this version of her is featured. What part of Africa would you think Hippolyta found her? I know you said the island shows up in one of six spots throughout the world, I wonder where it would be if the where more African Amazons out there.

Silent regrets, but hindsight is 20/20.

I need to put a map out of these six spots.

I'm assuming one of the locations is/was in Hurricane Matthew's path, and the one for Nubia would be off the northwest coast of Africa by Morocco and Mauritania. Would've defaulted to around South Africa but, that would've been too far.

Lyta seems to have gone to the Bruce Wayne school of hoarding orphans.... Or would technically be the other way around?
Being one of her daughters seems more like a status symbol/rank in a way.

Either way, I knew Nubia was gonna be the wise one

Also, Donna is laying out truth on Andraste.Β
I have no idea about what Hippolyta is suggesting.Β

I'm a tad nervous about Hippolyta...

But it's nice to see that Nubia is the one with the least itchy trigger finger. XP Though given her experience...I think red should not argue with the woman who has YEARS above experience than her XP

Uh oh...should we be concerned about Hippolyta's idea?

So basically Nubia was the one who taught the Amazons how to do everything else besides stabbing?

This could be either good, or bad for the amazons...
