Description Painted in Los Angeles, October, 2006. Acrylic on canvas. 18" x 18"

The thoughts that I had while painting this were of the tiny worlds that live beyond our sight. The tiny microscopic world were creatures exist so alien to us that they seem to be fictional. The worlds of the 'MICROBIA'.

My mind often drifts off and I wonder about tiny worlds that theoretically may exist deep in the sub-atomic materials that make up the worlds of the ameba. Might there not exists creatures so small that we have not yet discovered them? And if that's possible, could there even be intelligence of some sort?

I could speak more to these ideas, but I'll let the painting speak for me.

This piece, for me, is very reminiscent of Gary Baseman, who I admire a lot. Although, sometimes Baseman crowds his paintings with so many characters and so many things and it feels disjointed. I feel like although you've added so much to this piece...so much to look at...it doesn't seem overloaded. It all fits so nicely. Well thought out and well executed!

I share those same ponderings ... and how do we know our stars and galaxies don't act as atoms for a much larger universe?

this makes me think of an old print i saw once of what people were speculating lived in the water of the Thames river in England...i wish i could remember the exact caption but i remember it was something like "creatures and cockatrices and chimaeras dire." it made me laugh.

I love the designs of the individual creatures, and the almost disconcertingly bright colours. It all looks so chaotic and very alive .

Actually, it also makes me kinda think of a picture book that you'd give children if you wanted to both stimulate their imagination and scare the living crap out of them.

Yet another captivating painting with so much detail, I could lose myself for hours! I've often entertained the same thoughts about the microcosm. I'm sure this painting makes your wife as uncomfortable as it does me - people having gone through a virulent staph infection can appreciate how REAL the unseen world is!

Well, she does not look at the painting that way - however, there are many, MANY other things that make her, and myself, VERY uncomfortable. I am fascinated by the 'microbial' universe. I'm going to do more paintings like this one ... hopefully this year.

Your style reminds me of those old, phalic disney cartoons... I enjoy the colour also and the small abstract shapes in the background. The whole thing looks a little like paisley if you blur your vision.
