Description
Painted in San Francisco circa 1982. size: 17” x 27” water color & gouache, airbrush and hand-brushedThis painting was destroyed in a house fire in 1995. Highly influenced by H.R. Giger, one of my artist heroes.
The little joke about this painting was; “IS THIS A FISH CHASING ANOTHER FISH, OR A FISH CHASING IT’S OWN TAIL?”
This painting is from the time when I first started my art. I had always drawn, and done a few paintings in my early life. However, it was not until 1979, at age 28 that I decided I would stop watching TV at night and going to my job all day, (insurance agent) and resign myself to that mediocre life. I Decided that my life had to be more than a 9 to 5 job, drinking and screwing on the weekends, and TV all night after work. So, I decided I would do some art.
At that time it never crossed my mind that anything other than a hobby would come of it. But I did know that it would at least give me a balance. I was driven to express myself. I was boiling over with something. I was becoming a mean and stupid drunk. I was very angry. (I kept very detailed diaries from 1979 through 1995, all lost in the same house fire)
In my childhood I’d seen counselors who suggested that I use art as a catharsis to express my feelings of anger and helplessness. And so I did. Doing this art has always been for my personal gratification and benefit. Still is. When friends back in the beginning days (I had some friends in those days) would criticize or laugh at my crude drawings I simply would say, “fuck you asshole” … but soon I got much better, and they were impressed with my improvement. I did art every day for 25 years and now it’s what I do for my living.

I remember this picture particularly when I was first visiting your old site back in '94-'95, whenever it was. Very striking image. So glad to see the modern Pickman is still at it

I love this piece! I've seen it online somewhere. I think this is my favorite of your work so far ( I still have a lot to look through) your work is amazing! sorry it got lost in a fire. hell, repaint it! i've done that with one of mine that a friend liked so well he wanted it, but i wanted to keep the original and paint him a copy with some updates to it (see "boobleland, fantasy world 10" in my gallery) I'm glad I found your art on here. It is very inspirational and visually intense!

i have these scary visions of an endless ocean of black water and a black sky with fish like things in it the size of skyscrapers, they sort of look like this piece, it gives me that sinking feeling in my stomach.

I've really been admiring your work for the past few years. This fish reminds me of a nightmare I had when I was young...
There is something beautiful to be found in the grotesque.
SHARP. Keep it up!

Beautiful work man. Pity about that fire. Good job you got a decent pic of it though. Same thing happened to a couple of mine in a fire in Belfast before I got any shots of them.

I love this for many reasons. One, the colors are just fuckin' amazing. Sorry for the harsh language, but I can not think of another word to express the anger on how great this is. So smooth, so utterly PERFECT! It's insane!
Two, the fish itself. These fish, Angler Fish, have always scared me, and anything that is able to scare me I find fascinating. The eye is really intense, and the teeth, I won't even go there on how great the teeth are. even if this isn't an Angler, I still love it.
Three, you mentioned Giger being the inspiration. He's an inspiration to many of my drawings too. He has come a long way in his technique, and the way he, and you (I have gawked at alot of your pictures in the past 25 minutes) are able to use so many techniques, textures, and shapes in the paintings keeps it interesting and fun to look at for DAYS! I am sure if I stared at this for 30 minutes strait, then came back to look at it again, I would find something even better, and more awesome each time. I LOVE this.
Okay, now that I am done kissing your beautiful ass, and most likely scaring you cuz I love this picture so much, I am going to add it to my favorites, and bid you a good day. LATER XD!

Okay....i canNOT beLIEVE that this is one of your first paintings....And i WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!
This is so great...the idea of a Blood fish...Like this....bones and teeth and one fucking big eye. The color is so bold and the lines are so clean and the concept is just blowin' my mind....And i am in awe of all of the different media that you used to make it. You are truly a genius and i WANT one....(a painting)
.......Unfortunately, i will have to wait until my disability money comes in couple of weeks. Will there be some left??? *(PLEASE say yes....)*
In the meantime, i am adding this to my list of FAVORITES and every one else should, too. And i want to tell you that you have realized every dedicated artist's dream; to make a living making your art. Yes, it is what i want to do, too....And i DO think i am that good. It is so good to see that you are doing what you want, loving it and making money all at the same time....
i would wish you all of the best, but it sounds like you already have it.

Like the midgard Serpent in Norse mythology that's eating it's own tail.
