8" x 10" Acrylic on panel ~ 8/2008I sat down and sketched this out using a soft lead pencil (B-6). Didn't erase anything, just started painting over the sketch. Didn't think about what I was painting at all. Just let it roll out.
The only thing I did think about was the colors. This is the palette I'm using in a few other projects. (red, orange, violet and raw "Buff" titanium)
All these faces. They all look "anguished" or at least, somewhat disturbed.
As I think about it, that makes perfect sense. They are disturbed because they are an extension of who I am, and I AM disturbed ... I am disturbed by what I am, and what I see around me.
When I look in a mirror ... It's a frightening thing!
I used to be young and handsome. I was vain. I would preen in the mirror, absolutely in love with myself.
When we are young, we wonder what we will become. When we are older, we wonder at what we HAVE become!
What I do know is that it doesn't get any better than this ...

i like that the reflex doesnt have nothing to do with the "thing" looking at it...its interesting, cause reflexes are not reality, they are the complete opposite.

The shine in each and every eye is amazing. the streched skin the mouths and all those teeth! such fabulous detail work and the mirror reflection outstanding piece of art work!

This is probably one of my fav pieces of yours, maybe because it's a piece that talks about what's inside xD.
I find the critters extremely hillarious for some reason xD LOL. I love the top part of the face where the eyelid is a thin piece of skin stretch over another piece. It's cool, and looks kinda painful xD.

unless you really did mean you were a canal in an arm leading to the heart. i suppose that would be deep and insightful and metaphoric somehow, so alright!

Too bad we take being young for granted until our looks start to fade, and then we wish we would have appreciated youth more. I'm already starting to wish I didn't take being younger for granted and I'm only 20! I wish no one had physical form, haha.

Oh man... I really like this one, and it's relationship to what many psychologists and philosophers call the Looking-glass self, while not only the emotional self but the Visual self, and what these visions imply, to who and what we are, as illusion or even in reality.
its funny, in an odd sort of way, how people react to aging imperfections and, and even the beauty of that, in contrast to within themselves.
I believe age and ugliness and complete imperfection is all an illusion of our minds.

As always I am a fan of your work because both how easily I can relate to your paintings and just the talent and time I can only image that it takes to create each piece. I feel compelled to tell you my relation this painting because of what happened to me just yesterday morning. I have been dealing with anarexia for 9 years and have always felt that I look like 200 pounds even though the scale says 95. Its a horrible and disturbing disorder. I hate that no one else can see this 200 pound me. Not that I want to be seen as 200 pounds, but I want my feelings to be validated so I can feel less insane. So I had this dream 2 days ago, I don't remember the specifics and I think a dog was involved, but the result of the dream ended with me waking, screaming and grabbing my face because I thought that the left side of my face had been mauled off. I thought I felt fluid, what I assumed to be blood, gushing from my left eye.. of which my vision was blured upon waking. Aster calming myself down infront of my bathroom mirror I became curious of why this dream was so intense. After talking with a trusted friend, we deducted that my subconscious was so upset that no one could see this hideous 200 pound me, that it manifested itself into a body disfiguring that could not be overlooked and missed by those around me.
So when I saw your painting I couldn't help but to think of myself staring into the mirror and seeing these disfigured me's.

You definitely have a signature style of artwork, I really like that. Everything looks really nicely done. I especially like the eyes, they look really realistic in a surreal picture.

I can relate much better than I'd like (I'm no spring chicken either). I also thought it had a very metaphysical message to it - as we grow older we surprise ourselves in that we are rarely the person we were so used to seeing in the mirror. We have different personas for different people and events and places. Looking into the mirror after you've got a few years under your belt can leave you confused and scared that you just might be the person you once thought you were!
