Description
This is a drawing for my friend I have drawn it as a gift to welcome him to the UK as he has just arrived here to study. He told me he was really going to miss his little niece Asmi, who calls him Monkey UncleIt took me around 24 hours, I think.

I struggled a bit getting a half decent photo, but you lot already know how they never look as good anyway so I wont fret....as long as the original looks okay to Shiv when he gets it.

I bet it looks fabulous in real life. I just bet it does. @_@
Anyway, it looks good enough here! Your work is so intricate... eep. I love the way you render blacks, like the hair, while retaining a depth and volume to them, so they're not too distracting from paler areas.

I'm sure he's absolutely going to love it, this is a really thoughtful gift to give him. I have a quick question for you... how do you keep the really dark areas of graphite from becoming really 'reflective'? I find that, whenever I try to use it and get to a dark spot, it gets a horrible shine to it. I absolutely hate the glare of the light hitting it, since you can't really see the picture anymore, so I'm wondering if you have any tricks that you use? I've been told that just layering the graphite is a way to go, or to use a workable fixative (mind you, I haven't tested that method yet) but in the end it just doesn't seem to become as dark as I want it.

Thanks
I'm afraid I don't really know, this does have some shine, especially on the hair. I find that if I want my blacks really black then layering doesn't work, the softest pencil needs to go straight onto the paper. Spraying with fixative does help a little by diffusing some of the light, but not completely. I took the photo of this before I sprayed it. I have a method for taking photos to eliminate the shine. I photo them in a room with two windows so the light source isn't from one place and I put my drawing upright on a wheelie chair and move it around the room so that it is between the light sources but not facing them (if you know what I mean) then keep my camera parallel to the paper and keep taking shots, with the flash off, adjusting the position if I see any shine. I've pretty much got the hang of it now in that I know roughly the position of the chair for the best photo.

There is a tendency with your work to look for technically perfect images, mainly due to your heightened proficiencies in art, particularly with pencil drawings. That would be a mistake here, as I can see that you drew this with your heart, and rather than approaching it as a technical objective, you came at it with caring eyes. And that is what shows here. Caring eyes. It is at once a blissful piece and a lovely gift well worth waiting for.

Thank you Denis...I did indeed approach this differently...I was sneakings and just used a pic Shiv once linked me to as I wanted to see his reaction when he first realised I was drawing one for him...had it been planned, it would have not been as much fun for me.

Thanks Erika....he phoned me today , he's a bit tired from such a long journey....he asked about his picture and when I said it was finished he said he might go to an internet-cafe tonight to look at it, but I said maybe he should get some sleep.
