Description
InformationThis unique commission is for Verridith ! She wanted a high-fantasy, dramatically-lit, brightly-colored mountain range with a tiny dragon in it--right up my alley. I absolutely hate working with rocks--so much highlighting and shading with all those cracks and facets, ahhhh--but I still enjoyed the process. Mainly. xD I was originally going to work it in pastels but once she provided me with the dragon, I decided to instead match its colors, so that was the palette I used.

Always so supportive and kind-hearted! Thank you! The palette came from the pre-created dragon I was given when it was ordered, it was challenging and very fun to work with!

It's called a photomanipulation! Basically, you cut out a bunch of photographs, taking small pieces from some and larger from other--my favorite is using something really unorthodox, like I recently used the fur from a winter hat to make a big mane for a horse! Then, you compile all the cut up photographs and blend them together, usually takes a few hours to make everything look natural. Then, from there, you paint on top of it. For example, in a horse, I keep the same original pose as the photograph, but I paint my own anatomy, eyes, hooves, hair, and any accessories for that horse. So it's a mixture of photo-blending and digital painting and I love the challenge of having to paint realistically enough to make it look natural side-by-side to actual photographs! I always find it more challenging than basic digital painting, though normal digital painting takes longer since you have to paint the base, too. xD

ooooooo that's cool! Do you use Photoshop to combine the photos?

I do, indeed! I also use photoshop to do all the digital painting. I've never used anything but photoshop, honestly. I have the "student discount" monthly subscription to Creative Cloud (though I'm not a student, the site doesn't know that cuz I was in school when I first got the account). Ah, well, I take that back, my parents started me on Paint Shop Pro when I was very young, like 12-ish, but I barely ever used it, never understood it, and never truly did art with it lol. So I would say I've never used anything but photoshop in that respect lol. My first version of photoshop was pirated half a century ago hahah I was forced to start paying when my laptop died and adobe had wizened up. But I'm glad for it--I use several other adobe programs for other things, I like having all updates free, and it has served me super well since I seem to go through a laptop at least once a year. x.x

Thank you! The color palette came from the dragon that the commissioner gave me. I probably would've done light goldens and blues from my own prerogative, but I think this more vivid, multi-colored look works really well, too!
