Description
Delaware's nickname of the "Diamond State" is shown by the large buff diamond in the centre of the flag. Upon the diamond are a single white star representing the state itself and its status as the "First State" as it was the first to ratify the United States Constitution. The three smaller stars represent Delaware's three counties and the three European nations which colonised the area - the Dutch, Swedes and English. The blue, white and green stripes are taken from the state coat of arms. The blue represents the Delaware River for which the state is named and together with the buff of the diamond reflect the blue and buff uniform worn by George Washington during the Crossing of the Delaware.
