Here's page 3. Looking at these again, I could have done a million things better. I was so caught up in reference, my story telling got jipped.Related content

I know these are rather old pieces, but I'm re-reading the novel right now so I felt like checking them out again and saying these kick ass, my friend!
Oh, and yeah, the worst thing about drawing historic (sp? you know what I mean) stuff is the amount of reference it takes. I mean, I'm drawing a western right now and I keep going back and forth to my computer to check some damn stupid detail. I should get a printer...

Yeah, I've seen your western pages, really good stuff. I know horses are a pain in the ass too. Thanks Vic.

lol-Nothing fancy let me tell you. I exclusively use BIC Grip 0.7 mm #2 tech pencils. Sounds more complicated than they are. They're just tech pencils you can pick up at any Wal-Mart. Thanks for asking.

I Like....Detail, nice linework, in the eyes of most artist nothing will ever be perfect(mainly when we look over our own work)but as an outsider looking in, looking great to me

rudy in all honesty, i agree, there are things you could have done better. not millions, but a couple.
HOWEVER....
your worst, would be some of marvels best when it pertains to the art i have seen from marvel from the past few years to now. i think they wanted a more flashy style, but there is no way that you can go there with a classic story like that. it needs to be given its due. its like having joe mad drawing moby dick...wrong artist
i checked out the other two test pages and i give you much respect for them, they are the best by far. im more of an animal/abstract artist myself and looking at your horse, i think you did real well with the musculature. did you pause the dvd? or did you have a stock photo? just curious.
i think you presented the story in the proper way man.
its been a while bro. been house hunting i will be contacting you fairly soon about couple of pieces. until then, be cool man.

I've looked at the sequence and I get what you mean, how the storytelling doesn't fit together (Establishing who the good guys are and who are bad and a plausible reason why they started indoors and then flipped outside), but your pages are really visual treats. You showed a bit too much leg anatomy in panel 1 of this page and two (Especially since they're clothed and historically, these guys were faaaaat), but that's a minor annoyance...it's irrelevant unless you're aiming for Aspen Studios; they tend to incorporate anatomy anywhere. Before I forget, try adding a bit more fat to the hands you draw, Rudy. They seem a bit flat upon closer inspection (panels 3, 4 and 6).
A couple of observations made in...10 minutes, I guess.

Sweet pages!
Hey if Marvel 'went another direction' - who's to stop you from producing your own work regarding the Musketeers. Marvel can't copywrite a known tale. Just tell the story how you see it and design it.
That is, if you are into the story and have the spare time. You never know - your interpretation could always be favored amung readers compaired to Marvels' version.

LOL-Wow, you do have great ambitions! I would love to, but I'd have to NOT use Roy Thomas' script, rewrite my version and find a way to finance it. I wish I had the spare time and money to do it though.

psychomud In reply to RudyVasquez [2007-05-09 06:12:03 +0000 UTC]
Oh yeah! Money is always the big problem. Spare time is a close second. At the speed I draw - I can't keep up with my ideas. I have like 10 "wouldn't it be cool to draw ______ as/vs/staring ____ " - ideas a day - easy. Course when you work with other comic book fans - thats usually the primary topic at some point during the day.
If I had your talent - when ever I get ahead of deadlines, I'd work on side projects. Never know then that 'big day' will come were a movie producer or publisher will pay TONS of cash for a 'fresh take' on and 'old story'.
Maybe - just maybe - you will become one of the mega-star artists and people will fork over cash for ANYTHING you put out - then when you dig up side projects and ride the cash/fame wave until the next 'hot talent' comes along. Right?
Maybe its just my opinion, but back when Image was starting out - some of those guys could draw a turd and people would buy up as many copys as they could - hahahah!
Ahhhh - the golden days of comic collectable value speculation!

Dude! That's what's fun but so draining. I have to research by any means. DVD's, videos, i-net, books, ect. All for the time period. A period project can easily start to feel like a school project. I learned a lot though and grew to love and appreciate the story in it's classic form.
