Quick sketches of the main cast for How To Train Your Dragon (opens March 26th 2010 in North America).It is different from the original book, so if you have read or are planning to read it...yes. Big differences.
The movie itself doesn't reinvent anything: it is an often told story with known themes, so no big surprises. What is important though is trying to tell it well, and for a movie that was done in barely more than a year (feature animated films usually take 2 to 4 years), I believe it has succeeded.
The more fun to draw are the other kids (the twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut, Fishlegs and Snotlout), Gobber and Toothless. Sorry Hiccup and Astrid!

...heaven help us, but the old-timers were right. I have searched dA, hoping for Hiccup/Astrid art, and found instead a preponderance of Hiccup/Toothless. Even the shippers seem hesitant to think too hard about that one.

It is true that the friendship between Hiccup and Toothless is the main story of the movie. The shippers just took it and ran away with it gleefuly!
But there is a good deal of Hiccup and Astrid pairing, and quite a few others as well.

*chuckles* True, that. I'm glad to have found at least some H/A...and the madness of the Avatar fandom broke me of the habit of being too fussy about shipping. Crusading spoils the fun of it all.
I wonder if Fishlegs ever gets shipped?

I've also heard of Fishlegs being shipped with Snotlout of Hiccup, but I haven't seen any of those pairing ideas.

I agree with Gobber, by the way. Shipping makes every fandom a hazardous place. At least HTTYD hasn't turned into the acid-drenched hate pit of the ATLA or PokΓ©mon Shipping Holy Wars.

And I LOVE Ruffnut and Tuffnut, they are so cool! In fact, I love all the characters, it's such a great movie because it's like you said - it tells the story well. And 3D really made the movie even more amazing instead of hiding weak parts like it does with other movies.
Thank you and all the others you worked with for this great movie, there aren't a lot of movies that leave that much impact when I leave the cinema. I will watch it a third time this weekend because DVD won't just be the same

I saw the movie last night, and I loved it! Toothless reminds me of my black cat, whom we've often called a dragon-cat because he sleeps on his toy hoard. Hmm...
