Description
Quick sketches of the main cast for How To Train Your Dragon (opens March 26th 2010 in North America). It is different from the original book, so if you have read or are planning to read it...yes. Big differences.
The movie itself doesn't reinvent anything: it is an often told story with known themes, so no big surprises. What is important though is trying to tell it well, and for a movie that was done in barely more than a year (feature animated films usually take 2 to 4 years), I believe it has succeeded.
The more fun to draw are the other kids (the twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut, Fishlegs and Snotlout), Gobber and Toothless. Sorry Hiccup and Astrid!

Still very excited about this one, though I might not get to see it right away like I want to D: I had read the original book, and the movie is going to be pretty obviously different... but I actually prefer it that way, really. I just can't see the original story working very well on the big screen .__.

Aww! This movie looks really cute, but I haven't read the books. I didn't even know there were books (shame on me)
Um, did you work on this movie?

The movie can be seen without reading the books (but the books are cute too- see if you can loan them from the library. They should be in the youth section).
I have helped with the movie.

Just don't make any sudden noises around dragons: they can react nervously and start a few fires.

Gawd, I wish you'd do comics and graphic novels.
This movie looks okay, was wondering how they got another one out so quick. The last movie dreamworks seemed like it half-assed was SharkTale.

This movie has been in the works for years. Then changes were demanded and a huge chunk of it had to be redone (i.e. the whole story).

Huh.. well it still looks a helluva lot better than SharkTale...
seriously, Jack Black barely made it watchable.
We want your creative fingers in more stuff though, we eat it up!

hey! nice drawing ^_^
but... question: you said that It is different from the original book... and that happens a lot in movies... why is that? I bet sometimes is because will be easyer to understand... but some others seems so stupid... why is that? do you know?

rufftoon In reply to Mundolibre [2010-04-02 07:37:13 +0000 UTC]
I really can't say. It's different for every book or story that gets adapted. Sometimes, it's logistics, other times it's the translation from words to visuals that demands some tweaks in order for it to work. Other times, the book is just the template from which the world is rebuilt.
There are hundreds of reasons I guess.

This story almost feels like a prequel of sort- vikings and dragons weren't always friends (like man and dog, if you go way back in prehistory). You can imagine this as being set before the books.

I got offered a chance to see an advance screening of it, but it didn't gel with my schedule sadly, so I have to see it like a normal person. Fortunately, that will be like a normal person, on a date with someone who really likes animated movies, vikings and dragons so win all around! Character drawings look way fun, hope you had a good time on this film, for sure!

Awww, look at your cute icon!
Eh, good you get the chance to see it in good company.
It was hard not to have a fun time with it. Dragons and vikings are both fun to draw, so if one gets a chance to mix the two together, that is excellent.

isn't my icon awesome? ~NotQuiteNormal made it for me, I love it to pieces. I took a couple week animation class at the guild in burbank in January, reinforced my beleif that I am not cut out to animate, and that you guys do a fantastic job at something very complicated!
Company for movies is very nice, but if you think about it, it doesn't matter all that much you're in the dark paying attention to something else, you really only do Other Things if the movie is boring, which I am not hoping this one will be : )

The modellers have done a good job- rigging dragons for them to work demands skills, especially with spikes moving all over the body!
Kudos to the lighting team too.

I shouldn't like this film. I really shouldn't. It's made by dreamworks (I'm a follower of Pixar, and with the exception of a good few, Dreamworks' stories aren't that outstanding... No offense)... It's got dragons, which I thought I got over at around age 10. But here I am, getting pumped about it!
It must be the Artwork for it, which is fun to look at.
That and the fact that it's Viking-related.
Anyway, love the work.

rufftoon In reply to Mjonir001 [2010-03-22 21:48:55 +0000 UTC]
No offense taken: Pixar and Dreamworks do different types of film. Different sensibilities. Dragon is almost atypical for Dreamworks, which could be a good or bad thing.
Ah, dragons and vikings- hard to resist.
