Description
Quick sketches of the main cast for How To Train Your Dragon (opens March 26th 2010 in North America). It is different from the original book, so if you have read or are planning to read it...yes. Big differences.
The movie itself doesn't reinvent anything: it is an often told story with known themes, so no big surprises. What is important though is trying to tell it well, and for a movie that was done in barely more than a year (feature animated films usually take 2 to 4 years), I believe it has succeeded.
The more fun to draw are the other kids (the twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut, Fishlegs and Snotlout), Gobber and Toothless. Sorry Hiccup and Astrid!

Why does everybody hate Astrid?
I seriously don't understand... I mean, I read the books, and when I heard there was going to be a main girl I was like: ''..kill.. ''
But when I actually saw the trailer and heard what her character was like, my reaction was like '' I must obsess over her!''
I swear that I've never seen a more kickass main girl!
And haters, do whatever you want. Just don't force your oppinion on me, because believe me.
I WILL bite. D:<
I love your doodles by the way! I wish I was this good..

All characters have their core haters...and those that love them.
I've got nothing against poor Astrid, except when she's being difficult and doesn't let herself be drawn, ha ha!

Ghehe, really? I don't!
I think being difficult sometimes is nothing but human, it's what makes her so real! :R

toothleees!! Oh I love him. And I manly agree with you but I think there is a big suprise in the end... with hiccup. None of the children heroes ever lost a... O.O I was damn surprise. Otherwise, yeah it's just the typical stuff, but I quite liked to accent of Gobber in Germany. He talks like our fish heads in the north. XD Well but if you say the book is such a different thing... man must be the same with Moving Howl's Castle... The book was so different... uh sorry to spam you *blush*

Thanks for keeping the little surprise at the end a surprise (though there is spoiler fanart out there already).
Oooh, I'd love to hear the film in German. It's always fun to hear the voice work from different country.
The difference with the books are rather big. In the book, the dragons could talk.

Well I have to say I'm very glad they didn't talk I have to say. It was so horrible when they started to talk in Eragon. Takes somehow the mystical part away, I think. If beast can speak like human they think a bit more like human and not like animals any more. I like the quiet ones ^^
uh about the flat main characters like Astrid and Hiccup... I don't know. I Liked Hiccup's comments I have to say, for example "Dododo, We're doomed." ^^ ( And I think the other characters were actually not so different from the usual supporting characters: We had the cool ( and small-minded) shown-off, the nerd and the twins, which mostly are funny or stupid.) But the adults were really cool, I agree with that. ^^

Glad you got to see it and enjoy it!
I'm probably capturing an older version of Snotlout's attitude- when he was more bully and arrogant (ah heck, I adore drawing him! I have to draw his dad at some point too).

Main characters are usually over-designed. I like Astrid's character, but she's the first animated secondary character I've really liked in a long, long time. And I think the last main protagonist in an animated movie was... Up, I think, and before that was Toy Story. Not much else, really.

...waaait just a minute, Wikipedia. How can Astrid's patronym be "Hofferson"? Is our heroine residing in the worst-hidden closet in Norway?
Then again, apparently our hero is not, in fact, Hiccup Stoickson, so it would seem that the tea table has been generally upended on patronyms. Hmm.
Still, the masculine suffix, Astrid? Really? Is Hoffersdotter that bad? (Actually, don't answer that.)

TobuIshi In reply to rufftoon [2010-03-24 18:27:37 +0000 UTC]
True enough, true enough. (But the horns are so fun!)
Fun fact: The Japanese word for an all-you-can-eat buffet is "a Viking". I suspect it was shortened from the concept of a Viking feast? There was a great commercial for an English lesson company a few years back, where a man sat down at a restaurant and proudly declared, "I would like the Viking!"
A large Nordic fellow immediately came running in, and the shocked diner quickly amended his order. "No, no, no! I would like the buffet!" Great stuff.
...bit confusing if you don't know the context, though.

*chuckles* The distilled crazy of the A:TLA fandom splintered my hull at last, with regards to shipping. I can't be monogamous anymore--it only seems to lead to arguments and trouble. Panshipping, ahoy!
This film looks a lot more fun than I've been giving it credit for. The advertising out here in Japan has been pretty lackluster (they're calling it "Hic and the Dragon"), and I was chalking it up as one of those cheap feature-length toy commercials, but this sketch got me looking for a trailer and it actually seems pretty well done. (Bit like E.T.-with-Vikings, to be honest, but there's nothing amiss with a lovingly made, quality presentation of a tried-and-true formula.)
Sadly, I won't be seeing it in theaters. I'm moving back to America the week before it comes out in Japan...by which time the American theatrical release will almost certainly be over.

(Dare you to draw it? )
The advance-ticket swag and merchandise out here for Western animated films is awesome. I have a wonderful little Carl keychain from Up that came with our advance tickets, a Wall-E figurine that came with my popcorn, and the movie pamphlet for Coraline...
Hey, count your blessings, though. Movies take forever to come out in Japan. The Princess and the Frog just hit theaters last week, and Coraline was delayed for more than a year... OTL
