Still got Avatar on the mind.Rough pencils (actually pretty clean, but still...rough work) of Iroh costume reference notes. Except for the younger Iroh (extreme left, completely invented, story idea too) and the General Iroh (Ba Sing Se siege), the clothes are referenced from screenshots. The thing is, with his general armour, nothing was seen below the breastplate. The big flame design can be seen on other generals' armours in the serie. But the lower part is still just speculation.
Seeing how little Iroh changed over the years, I didn't dare move too far away from his overall look for his younger self.
Eh, that's the thing before starting projects or ideas: notes notes and more notes. See what work, doodles for easy reference during work, etc...Just in case I ever do something with all these.

Stick Daemons make little commentaries apparitions. They tend to do that, but not too often.
Iroh belong to Mike and Bryan, Nickelodeon and Viacom. I'm just having fun drawing him.

Iroh IS a stocky guy. It doesn't help that firebender uniforms seem to add bulk. I wonder if Lu Ten had some of his father's stockiness or if he inherited Ozai's biuld?

Good question about Lu Ten- possibly a bit of both: stocky, but taller than his old man.

I do love these. It's hard to believe they're pencil sketches since they're done so well. I also agree that cloaks give a nice armor disguise.

Well now you've made up for the lack of Iroh in that AU group shot. I never really thought about Iroh's proportions before; he is a rather stocky fellow eh?

That he is; the moment I started counting how many heads tall he was, I kept repeating myself "this is too short for an adult". But it is part of his whole design. Short, stocky, powerful.

He's very different from other firebenders in that way, pretty much every other firebender is tall, lean, quick and hard (Zuko, Azula, Jeong Jeong, etc.) And Iroh's style of fighting seems to lend itself to the softer styles of the Nรจijiฤ. Taijiquan and what have you.

He's certainly admitted to have observed other bending styles and adapted them to his own style of fighting.

Funny how Iroh as retired general looks happier than Tea Shop Owner Iroh..(of course we all know why..).. True 'bout the cloaks..(also his stocky built seems more fitting for an earth bender no? but then again there are always exceptions)..love your notes!

Hehe, if the fugitive Iroh wasn't missing, his beard definitely reached much wilder proportions. At least at the tea shop he had it back nice and trim.

I wonder if it was much overweightness in his younger age, or just a whole lot of muscle from his military training. Maybe a bit of both, with more muscles than extra flesh.

I do have my own characters, but they are standing a bit on the back burner now. When they're ready to tell their stories, they'll come forward (well, I guess the stick daemons count as my own, but they are really simplistic to draw
