Apologies in advance.

More writing than drawing in this one. Just thought it would be interesting to compare the two scenes, the original animated series one with the movie version.

Though there were no obvious problems with the screen directions per say, it was the whole action- reaction and timing that was awkward in the movie.
Notice that for the animated series, we don't even see one earthbender doing one attack, and yet it is clear and makes sense.

Screen direction in storyboards, cutting and editing is very important. It is the link between the chains of events. It connects with the 180 degree rule :
[link]

Please note that this rule can be broken in service to the story, for emotional effect, etc.

As for the "Macarena" in panel 6, I blame this video:

Oh I agree, the timing was horrible. Thank you for making this.

The more I read these panels, the more I love them. I have probably read this a zillion times but not lately, so when I come and revisit and see the heh macarena and the outrunning the rock and the indignant earth bender hello hysterical laughter.

At the speed its going you could wait till next summer for it to hit. By then the new avatar shows would start.

o and you also brought up the useless fire nation guards who did nothing while the earth benders revolted. Seriously, bad choreography.

young00 [2010-11-08 00:14:32 +0000 UTC]

omg this must have been horrible for you to watch! Shyamalan obviously needed a storyboard artist (perhaps a better one if he did have one) and a choreographer. Anyone who has watched the show realizes that it doesn't take much martial arts before the element emerges. The element and the bender move seamlessly and simultaneously together. Shyamalan seemed to just guess that the actors should have 2-5sec martial art before the element appears, which appeared very jarring.... almost like it was lagging lol.

Superstarsix In reply to kayade [2010-10-02 05:42:11 +0000 UTC]

That wasn't them though.
The scene was so awkwardly shot that you still think they did all that for a mid-sized rock.

Superstarsix In reply to kayade [2010-10-02 06:19:04 +0000 UTC]

I honestly do not know. I'll tell you this though, whenever an earthbender on the show took that long the end result was usually an awesome feat of bending.

You are awesome. I am in love with these drawings. They are so funny and so true. I was trying to explain the several problems i had with the movie to my friend who hadnt seen it but was a fan of the series but i could not do it as well as these drawings illustrate. All the same confusion i felt during the movie is shown here. Its like you were in my mind or something ^_^ but these are just great. You are really talented. =]

Also I lol'd so hard at the "STOMP STOMP Arm Swish" and the macarena video xD. The movie really didnt do this awesome series justice.. =/

Thank you so much! The movie was so bad, they need to be aware of everything they did wrong (or even just made aware of what could be so much better).

Earthsick [2010-09-06 19:42:39 +0000 UTC]

Lol I don't even remember that the rock was this small. I was distracted by the fact that they had to move around so much to make anything happen. How annoying.

Was it Macarena? LOL
i was thinking about THIS [link]

about the guard.. in the background..
y'know why would he stop anyone from revolting who cannot produce a simple attack after an hour dancing preparation, but a slowly gliding rock?

The Macarena part made me laugh really, really hard.

I was wondering about those earthbenders, too... did it take all that stomping and flailing to make that one little rock fly in slo-mo, or were they doing something else entirely? AGH.

In want to see more of the 'Avatar viewer' vs. "General audience' bits, now those were hilarious. "So why doesn't everyone freak out when this strange beast shows up", "Because Appa is awesome!" Lol. Thats what was happening to my friends who have never seen Avatar. They had no idea what was happening pretty much the whole time we were watching it. Best quote from them "Wait a minute... so those guys can move the earth" "yes" "They can do it without weapns or anything?" "thats right" "Then why are they being kept prisoner in a quarry! That doesn't make any sense!" "and there are only like five guards!" "Yep" "They could have broken out years ago! Why are they still there?" "They like the scenery thats why"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rufftoon In reply to ZutaraxZue [2010-08-22 06:08:05 +0000 UTC]

When part of the audience are not familiar with the original series, there are two distinct reactions: confusion as to what is happening, or just enjoying it for the fun of it.

Personally, if I didn't know the original, I would be thoroughly confused.

lol I watched the video. XD Wasn't it much easier when every move you did, you got fire or a huge chunk of rock?
