More writing than drawing in this one. Just thought it would be interesting to compare the two scenes, the original animated series one with the movie version.
Though there were no obvious problems with the screen directions per say, it was the whole action- reaction and timing that was awkward in the movie.
Notice that for the animated series, we don't even see one earthbender doing one attack, and yet it is clear and makes sense.
Screen direction in storyboards, cutting and editing is very important. It is the link between the chains of events. It connects with the 180 degree rule :

Please note that this rule can be broken in service to the story, for emotional effect, etc.
As for the "Macarena" in panel 6, I blame this video:

That part drove me crazy as well. One of the biggest problems I had with that movie was too much movement for their bending. They got too fancy with it, like when Aang was first waterbending at the North Pole. I was like, why's he moving his hands around so much??
Good stuff here again! XD You're great at explaining things and getting a good laugh out of it.

there was like ten fire nation standing around that whole time the earth benders were dancing just to throw one rock over while Ang is making fancy wind? that whole scene didnt make since.

There certainly was a whole lot of standing around instead of jumping into the fight.

yeah I was really disapointed in the direction of the film. Its like you said: in the show all they showed was Haru's dad move his foot and some earth bending and it made it seem there was a lot more action going on. Thats the beauty of editing, it cuts it to a simple understanding. As opposed to the movie where there doing this 360 shot of Aang creating a random tornado surrounded by fire nation. It seemed like they needed a lot more editing done.

*shakes head* If only you'd been there to fix it... or smash M Night Shyamalan in the head with a crowbar... either way, it would have improved the film dramatically.
Back to the point, that's an excellent explanation of story boarding. Thanks for posting it.

I'm sure there are better people than me out there who could fix it.
But it seems like the studio heads didn't care much about the film, or else they would have done some quality checks once in a while.

That scene bugged me sooooo much. They really downplay all of the benders' abilities. Fire benders need a source to bend, it takes 5 earth benders to lift one rock. Bummer-tastic.

Wow, I didn't know the group of earthbenders were the ones who created that wall.... I thought they were "dancing" for an attack that would have happened off camera, or perhaps conjured that rock to fly towards them... Well, guess it shows how much this movie fails. x3

I never saw the film, but I lol'd after watching the "TLA weird scene" video, when the amazing efforts of the dancing earthbenders have made the tiny rock look epic as well.

ROFL! You're so right with this one. I laughed when I read the Macarena panel (and I watched the video. Def one of my favs) because yes, I also wondered "what the f*** are they doing?! ... 6 men to move one rock?!?" when the earthbenders did their little dance.

I think they had to charge up their chi, or bending, or whatever before they could attack........
At least that was what I gathered from those extremely long complex yoga routines.

As another person commented (not quite quoting here): "It's no longer Martial Arts but summoning".
Where you have to go through a ritual to make something happen. It takes much away from element bending being a form of combat.

Yup. I think Shamalon wanted to do something cool with the bending.
Or he was trying to make the movie longer.....

i didn't go to see the movie mainly for the reason that i was afraid they would ruin all of the animals. just because y'know, in the past in live action movies...animals are generally either portrayed really freaking horribly or really well, and although Avatar's budget was probably decent, i pictured it as an animal killer
though i've been told the animals weren't that bad BD who knows

If I was to choose between Appa and Momo, I'd say Momo was my favourite in the movie.
Mind you, you don't get to see a lot of the creatures from the Avatar world in the movie. A few shots at most.

i was gonna say, i really doubted the animation for Appa, he's so huge plus he's always got direct touching contact with riders 'n what not, i was worried he'd look like something you'd see on those Discovery dino shows where the head is just a big hairy puppet lol

Thing is, it can be interpreted either way since the bending movements don't seem to have direct connection to the elements they move.
Your argument is as good as your friends.

As for the video--it reminded me that six earthbenders needed to do an elaborate dance to ov one rock that was basically the size of a good watermelon. As opposed to the series, where no such tomfoolery was pursued by anyone but Aang. Ah, fun...

I enjoye this. I enjoy when logic is applied to fantasy (not necessarily referring to the fantasy that Shamylan's scene was all that good). Thinking back, that was definitely my favorite frame for Haru in the entire series, and possibly ranking in the top ten of favorite frames overall (I like side characters a lot). That's one of the reasons why I hated that scene so much--to much dancing, too little earthbending (and too much 3D effects for a 2D showing).

the logical inconsistencies in the whole thing are baffling. we know the kid's dad brought up the first wall of earth to protect his son. most likely he brought up the second wall to protect himself. then the dancebenders come onscreen and for all their flailing around, they bring one rock wobbling by, which that last guy apparently takes control of and chucks it into a guard's stomach (who was presumably just standing there watching the whole thing happen and didn't even try to, i dunno, move or anything). then that SAME earthbender brings up his OWN wall of earth to protect himself from another fireblast. so these guys can pull up a 6-foot-tall wall of solid earth by crossing their arms, but they have to breakdance for 15 seconds to send one football-sized rock into a man's gut?

I don't think the 2nd earthwall was notTyro's doing. That's why he looked to the 6 Pebble Dancers. They did it...yet for some reason moved after the wall was created. I also wonder why it wasn't really notTyro who did it. What, did his ATK gauge have to refill so he could activate Stoneguard two times in a row? He should've had someone cast Haste before hand.
Friggin' n00bs.
