More writing than drawing in this one. Just thought it would be interesting to compare the two scenes, the original animated series one with the movie version.
Though there were no obvious problems with the screen directions per say, it was the whole action- reaction and timing that was awkward in the movie.
Notice that for the animated series, we don't even see one earthbender doing one attack, and yet it is clear and makes sense.
Screen direction in storyboards, cutting and editing is very important. It is the link between the chains of events. It connects with the 180 degree rule :

Please note that this rule can be broken in service to the story, for emotional effect, etc.
As for the "Macarena" in panel 6, I blame this video:

that pebble still baffles me...if I EVER get to talk to shyamalan I will demand an explenation for that rock...
as usual you''re critics are highly educative, I imagine they aren't even a fraction of how complex storyboarding can be though. Ever thought on making a book on it using scenes like these? I find that there are so many books on storyboarding and yet most of them tell me nothing or little at all. these few pages you just posted however have told me much more than those books.

I'd be terrible about making a book.
But one good exercise everyone can do is just to watch a movie and doodle out the sequences and shot. You can also learn a lotabout composition that way too.

Yes I have noticed that improves a lot, but unfortunatly some things just pass by us without us notecing.
as for being terrible I highly disagree with that.
You show great control over what you talk about and obviously have experience one can envy.
It might not look like it to yourself but for many others still learning these examples are explicit and go to the point unlike many books or lessons where we beat so much around the bush I don't even know what a root is anymore.

You just made the Pebble Dance even funnier. You have a great sense of humor and you're a great help to those of us who want to get into storyboarding. Merci bien! :3

I'm only scrapping the surface when it comes to storyboarding. It is so much more complex...*sigh*

For some reason, my brain keeps inserting "This has been Haru, your guide to the world of facts." at the end.
I still can't comprehend just how badly Sham-wow flubbed on this movie. It wasn't even a good movie on its own, even if it hadn't been loosely based on A:TLA.

just my two cents worth..
i kinda thought of huge Bollywood dance scenes rather than Macarena when I saw the stomps

Seeing as they made the Fire Nation sort of indian related, than a Bollywood song and dance moment wouldn't have been that far off XD

See, THIS is why the firebenders are able to use their firebending from their sources without them getting extinguished: the earthbenders are too concerned about getting their dance moves down pat!

It seemed to me as if it took the 6 guys to make the rock raise and a 7th to make it move. Otherwise I see no point in them still moving around like that, but then again they had a lot of unnecessary movement in the bending so it wouldn't be surprising if that was like...the after bending...

There are many points of view about that scene. It's just impossible to know which one is the best explanation. I guess they are all valid until proven otherwise.

LOL. I think that's what I disliked the most about that movie. In the cartoon series a bender moved /with/ their element. In the movie, however, they made each bender do a crazy series of flails and kicks and wiggles...It just looks like they were fighting off some invisible evil... and THEN their element finally goes "Oh yeah, I'm supposed to do something." Like when Aang is standing on the bridge and freaking out trying to make the ocean work with him. *heave sigh* Now everyone I know mocks me for loving the cartoon series.. they all think it's as bad and awkward as the movie...

rufftoon In reply to Arien-SaraLonde [2010-08-16 05:33:24 +0000 UTC]
You can tell the detractors that the only reason they wanted a live action film made was because the original animated series was good enough.
Think Harry Potter or any popular books that made it to film. If they were't a success to begin with, Hollywood wouldn't approach it.
As for the rest, as someone else commented, "This is no longer Martial Art but summoning".

There was way too much movement in the movie.
They do like entire dances for a small rock, when in the show they could throw a larger boulder within two movements.
Thats what I didnt like about the movie

That's some really fascinating stuff. I've heard comic-book artists complain about some of the odd Directing that writers attempt in terms of character positions and "camera" position, but I've never really understood what they mean. Seeing the breakdown of the Imprisoned scene in the first half of this piece really helps me to understand a lot of the considerations that go into this kind of stuff.
