More writing than drawing in this one. Just thought it would be interesting to compare the two scenes, the original animated series one with the movie version.
Though there were no obvious problems with the screen directions per say, it was the whole action- reaction and timing that was awkward in the movie.
Notice that for the animated series, we don't even see one earthbender doing one attack, and yet it is clear and makes sense.
Screen direction in storyboards, cutting and editing is very important. It is the link between the chains of events. It connects with the 180 degree rule :

Please note that this rule can be broken in service to the story, for emotional effect, etc.
As for the "Macarena" in panel 6, I blame this video:

Read the page first, then went to see the video. Couldn't stop laughing for about five minutes, nearly hyperventilated. That's just too funny. I love these! Thanks so much for putting them up!

This was very helpful and it definitely makes a lot of sense.
I really love the way you draw. I only wish I was that good. ^^'
I haven't seen the movie yet. I heard it wasn't all that great, but I love the animated series.

The movie has awkward moments. But some people manage to overlook these and enjoy the movie. Question of taste.

Yeah, I don't usually listen to what people say about movies (I like to watch them for myself), but I heard that a lot of people didn't like how it cut out a lot of the things from the animated series. But you have to remember it's a movie. It can't possibly fit everything from the show into a couple of hours. xD

I totally agree that it is impossible to fit in a full first season of Avatar in less than two hours. But I believe it is still possible to tell a story than can stand on its own, as long as it is constructed well. Lots of adaptation needed.
I'm all for people going to see it for themselves and making up their own opinion.

This is really very informative. I like seeing your analysis of the original scene versus the one used in the movie, and why one was effective and the other not, particularly in terms of camera angles and character placement: how putting someone in the wrong position can create a mass of confusion for the viewer.
Ah, if only I were better at storyboarding.

It seemed to me that entire stomping crowd of earth benders was responsible for slowly moving that rock. I thought it made the earth benders seem rather pathetic.

If it was, then the scene would have worked better if it had cut to a totally different shot.
Having the rock cross right in front as they finish their moves makes us believe they triggered that.
If you don't want the audience to think that, then cut away from them BEFORE the rock shows up.

Maybe they were distracting the firebenders till the guy off screen moved the rock?

That is still open to debate: did the 6 earthbenders move that rock wall and they're just continuing movign for nothing? Or did all their moves trigger that smaller rock, and the guy coming in at the end just gives a final push?

That movie was crap. I always thought that if M.Night directed something he DIDN'T write he would do okay, but these might prove that M.Night is a little more careless than I initially thought.

I know he only directs things he writes. I think he'd do much better if he didn't write his own movies, but what Rufftoon is saying is that M.Night is also steal dealing with a lot of technical problems.

And what technical problems?

Bashtal In reply to iesnoth [2010-08-15 20:56:41 +0000 UTC]
Technical as in things like what Rufftoon was saying: Bad screen direction and bad timing and bad special effects.
I don't know why but M.Night has never directed anything he hasn't written so it probably has more to do with him than anything.

but more or less the way they showed Bending as a bit of dancing AND THEN something happens...just ruins the concept of bending <-so much of this was on my face. lol

SERIOUSLY !!! i mean .... seriously it took 5 Earthbenders to move a tiny rock across the screen and just 1 can throw it... and whats with the Firenation souldiers are they just enjoing the show or what... at least they could dansing with the Earthbenders the Macarena

Interesting. I do have a question thats both general movie and Avatar movie related.
You see I watched one of those "Behind the Scenes" of the movie and found out the reason why M. Night Shyamalan made Fire Bending require a fire source was because he thought it was illogican how other element benders needed a source for there power while fire benders didn't so he changed that.
I myself respected his decision for logic but was against that he still changed one of the major concepts. The movie would of had the Kyoshi Warriors but because he has so much story on them he had to cut them ultimately.
I just wanted to know your oppinion when any movie (not just Avatar) that are based on a series (Television, Book, Computer games), whats your oppinion on concept changes, from minor to major?
I haven't seen the movie yet. Please no spoilers but would like to know your oppinion.

It really depends.
I've had the wonderful opportunity to work on the animated film "How To Train Your Dragon" which, if you've read the books, are very different.
There are demands within productions that will change adaptations, but it will change from project to project.
Imagine if they had changed major concepts from the Harry Potter books to the big screen? What would the audience reaction have been?
Are studios more careful when they are dealing with a huge franchise?
I am more than willing to accept modifications (small and large) during adaptation. As long as the story you tell is engaging and makes sense. Any changes HAS to serve the story! For example, there were name pronunciation changes in Last Airbender. Did it bring something extra to the story? Not really no. Then why do it?
In How To Train Your Dragon, a character not in the book (Astrid) was introduced in the film. She played a role and help push the story along.
Same in Coraline- the appearance of the character Wybie was also not in the book but helped give some information to bring the story along.
What if M.Night had told a story not based at all on the first season? It could still have worked and added another layer to the Avatar universe. I would have been willing to accept that.

Hm, I might be wrong but kinda like how I feel for the Super Mario movie. This movie is pretty much nothing at all like the colourful computer games, which is why I respect and like this movie being an original take on it.
Well, I still get where your comming from. If you ask me I am OK with cosmetic changes.
For example, I like Aangs new arrow tattoo, I think it looks awsome compared to his cartoon one and while they coulda just slapped a regular arrow on Niah, Ithink his new arrow is awsome. But even if Shaun Toub made a brilliant Uncle Iroh impresison... he is just doesn't look old enough for the part I just think Iroh needs to be old.
But I really can't have much of an oppinion about Iroh or anything else that "doesn't look right" without actually seeing the movie.
