I'm a huge fan of interesting self portraits...and this one certainly is different to most styles in that category.
I adore the parasol and the extended leg running towards the camera gives the shot a quirky look which I find appealing.

I can never seem to do a good self portrait- so I'm glad that I've had such good feedback about this piece

You're going to need the 200 with the remote/timer and learn how to set it up for 'timer and interval' shooting.

IMAGINE how much easier it would have been if you had programmed in '50 second starting delay.. and then 3 instances of 5 shot bursts at 4 second intervals ( to let the flashes charge and let you try a few pose varriations inbetween )'

( All you have to do is wade through the manual and ALL THAT POWER IS YOURS!!! Muhuhaaaahahahaaa! )

I just use it as a cable release, myself - but it was less than half the price again to go from the ' push-button release' to the ' does everything you could reasonably ask a robot to do' model... but whenever possible: CHOOSE THE ONE WITH MORE MUTANT ABILLITIES! lol!

( Oh, and ' Nice Shot! ' I think some of the new plugins could have adjusted the contrast enough to better 'HIDE' you within the parisol.. but you are SUCH a purist! ;-P )

With the D70s, you have to reset to "timer" mode EVERY SHOT. Sometimes, I just want to punch Nikon....then I remember that theres nothing better

A solid parasol would have done better in this shot as mentioned. Beyond that, this is a wonderful picture and beautifully composed. In under 8 seconds too. Depending on how far you had to go, that is some pretty quick movement.

I think I'll reshoot it tonight- solid parasol this time I didnt have to run that far, but I think watching me would have been comical

I like this, it's very subtle. I like how you seem to appear from the blackness. Very nice and well-done.

The delicacy of the parasol beautifully compliments the delicacy of the skin against the starkness of the backdrop. I agree that perhaps a better pose would compliment the structure of the parasol, but overall, it is a wonderful effect.

I think next time I'll use a chinese parasol for this type of shot- thanks for the critique

very well done. i like how it's concealed and not out in the open. the umbrella was a nice touch. comforting. the blackness just enhances your skin. all around beautiful job!!

i would imagine. mine only has a 10 second timer so lol. i applaud u on that. or am i just confused and it's not a self portrait? I'm sorry, i'm a bit dazed tonight (no not drunk lol)

Rustyspoon In reply to X-ample [2006-11-09 06:36:27 +0000 UTC]

It is a self portrait, also a 10 secound timer. I find it hard to pose for a picture when I'm not sure what it'll come out like. I suppose a mirror would help though

OOOOOOOOOO u know what? i never thought about a mirror. duh. lol. great idea. so u had to do all that in 10 seconds? that wins the favorite for sure. been there done that. i've almost fallen off counters (the last nude series) trying to get up ther in a hurry lol.

i know, but i'm low on cash, we're planning a wedding. i so want a manual focus but i can't find one for under an obscene amount of money. thought about going back to film but unsure. ack! any ideas? lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rustyspoon In reply to X-ample [2006-11-09 07:32:22 +0000 UTC]

Film is going to suck your money from you, little by little. Try your local small camera shop, and see if they have any used digital SLRs. Usually they do, and most film lenses will work on a digital, and you can pick them up for cheap in pawn shops. Digital cameras RAPIDLY go down in price once their used, and theres usually nothing wrong with them.

ooo u got a point. never thought of just . . well do they make just focus lenses that are attachable? (i sound like an idiot but i'm having a off night mentally (long story) ) i know they go down in value as quick as a computer. I just about drooled at the Rebel when it came out. ok still do LOL. th quality of mine is ok. i just wish i had manual focus and a longer timer

Rustyspoon In reply to X-ample [2006-11-09 07:44:33 +0000 UTC]

What kind of camera do you have now? You make a good point. I'm selling my D70s for 800$ Lens included. When something goes down in value so fast, its still a good camera....or you could see if theres a 8800 Nikon. I dont think know if they make attachable manual focus lenses.

I have a Fuji FinePix S3000, so yeah not the best. i'm trying to keep it below 300 dollars. i'll just have to check out the pawn shops tomorrow. i dream of a nikon or canon. one day, one day. i even get the photography catalogs. i'm just poor that's all lol and getting me to save is tough. i spend on bills too much (instead of evening things out). thanks for the input. I remember hearing about the D70. I'm scared of Ebay when it comes to those things so yeah now i'm blabbling

Beautiful concept, but something about the composition of the boob is distracting me. I love the contrast. I'd like to see it with the body in a more posed shape. Right now, it seems like a very natural, human pose, which would be awesome alone, except you have this umbrella there and it's crisp and clean and not like the natural relaxedness of the body form. I'd like to see more from this set.

Rustyspoon In reply to kidd [2006-11-09 06:08:55 +0000 UTC]

The idea was to hide behind the parasol-I didnt realize my breast composition was weird. Guess you could call my body relaxed. The shoot was cut shot, I only have 4 or 5 shots- and this one is my favorite. Was working with a tripod and a timer- so it was a bit...interesting. I'm still working on my self portrait technique Thanks for the critique, I'll keep it in mind.
