Description Book Safes Made Using This Tutorial:
[link] - PirateLotuse-Stock

Welcome to my first tutorial!
This was originally made for the Get Crafting Tutorial Contest here: [link]

Today we'll be learning how to make one of those nifty "book safes" to hide all of our secret stuff in.
I've tried to make it in as little steps as possible while still making it understandable.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments and I'll do my best to help you out.

If you use this tutorial to make a book safe, be sure to post a link to it in the comments below.
I'd love to see how they turn out and how people's creativity works with book safes.

Thanks!

haha I agree XD Especially if you have the last book (the thickest one) it'd be even better. I would definitely do that to that book. All the books I have I like. I have the plastic book safes, but they're too blunt about being fake lol. I don't really stash anything in them though..it's more for just decoration.

You know, I kinda liked how the last movie turned out (the part 2, not part 1...got dragged into it by my girlfriend, lol) I've managed to read book one and two, but after that I decided it was enough, haha That last battle was kinda nice

This seems fun. But I love books too much to destroy them.
Btw, at first I was like "WTTF IS HE GONNA DESTROY ANNE RICE'S BOOK??!!"
But then I saw your explanation.

Lmao. I love books as well, but the crafty side can take over.

I'm already at work on it, I've got the signatures sewn together and am working on embroidering the cover fabric. I'll take pictures soon for you!

I was wondering about something. I've seen some styles, where they have glued or something a small stack of the papers to the top part, so it kinda.. 'Fits' inside the safe. Anyidea how to do that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RuthlessDreams In reply to KCarey [2011-06-14 06:26:50 +0000 UTC]

Hm. I'm not sure I'm understanding.
If you put the stack of paper to fit into your compartment, what is the point of the compartment? Lol.
Do you have a reference picture?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KCarey In reply to RuthlessDreams [2011-06-14 06:28:51 +0000 UTC]

Not a very large stack, just a small stack. I don't have any ref at this point... I saw them a long while ago.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RuthlessDreams In reply to KCarey [2011-06-14 19:23:40 +0000 UTC]

I suppose you could with the glue mixture. But I still don't understand the point of it. Lol. What would be the reasoning?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KCarey In reply to RuthlessDreams [2011-06-14 19:36:25 +0000 UTC]

I think it was to make it... So the cover kinda fit together, like a lid. ~shrugs~

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RuthlessDreams In reply to KCarey [2011-06-14 20:08:21 +0000 UTC]

Hm. Okay then. I would suggest taking the pages you cut out of your compartment and binding them together with your white glue and water mixture. Add weight and let it dry. Once it's dry, test to see if it fits into your compartment. Trim it down if it doesn't. Then use your white glue and water mixture to attache a few pages together that are in front of your compartment. This will make it a bit sturdier to attach your stack of pages to. Once everything is nice and dry, use a straight white glue to attach your stack of pages [aka "the lid"] to the pages you just glued together. Make sure it's lined up evenly. Add weight and let it fully dry. It should be good to go. Did it make since? Lol.

KCarey In reply to RuthlessDreams [2011-06-15 00:29:26 +0000 UTC]

It did. I was mostly curious and then through talking, actually started to wonder just.. What the point of it would be in the end.

RuthlessDreams In reply to KCarey [2011-06-15 04:32:52 +0000 UTC]

Haha. Okay. Well, now you know the easiest way I could think of doing it, just in case.

This looks fun, but I don't have any books I'm okay with destroying. Awesome tutorial, though! I should look for a crappy book to do this to...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RuthlessDreams In reply to glomdi [2011-06-04 04:16:37 +0000 UTC]

Definitely should. Preferably a book you think no one would be interested in looking at. This will keep it extra secrete. Lol.

magpiesmiscellany [2011-05-25 03:46:15 +0000 UTC]

Cool. The only downside of these is that I'm generally against damaging books, and the one I'd be okay with hurting I wouldn't want on my shelves What would be awesome is to do this with an anthology or something and leave the first story intact, so it's still usable both as book and as safe. *ponders*

RuthlessDreams In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2011-05-25 22:21:03 +0000 UTC]

Ah. That is actually a very good idea.
You could even use a graphic novel or something of the sort.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

magpiesmiscellany In reply to RuthlessDreams [2011-05-25 22:38:27 +0000 UTC]

It'd have to be a chubby one, unless you glued a few of a series together.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RuthlessDreams In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2011-05-25 22:52:50 +0000 UTC]

That could work, except when someone goes to pick it up, it will strike them as odd if they're all attached. Lol.
If it's just to stash money, you wouldn't need a very thick compartment.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

magpiesmiscellany In reply to RuthlessDreams [2011-05-26 01:02:06 +0000 UTC]

Good point. I guess I was thinking if it gets to the picking up point you're screwed already The only one I made I did for a friend who was nervous about moving to a big city, so I made it large enough for her whole wallet.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RuthlessDreams In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2011-05-26 05:04:52 +0000 UTC]

Well, that was sweet. And yeah, you're right.
But if you do the "natural" way and don't glue the outside pages, they'll be able to pick it up and still feel natural to do something simple like read the back cover. Lol.
