Description
From the same TL as these maps: [link] , [link]Yeah, the borders are convergent for an 1862 PoD, but I'm unfamiliar enough with the politics at the time to make a realistic alternative very difficult to determine.

So what Japan is a bilingual country in this timeline?

I feel like someone should time travel and give the Japanese the German slice of Papua New Guinea, just so they would be busy trying to develop that and less focused on being dicks to everyone else.

Makes me wonder how things would have turned out if their empire had survived longer.

Looks nice. So, is this map also of the same date as that US map? (1953 if I recall my Roman numerals?)

I guess the Americans ITTL were a bit more forceful in opening up Japan.

The opening was OTL's (pre-PoD), and the Americans actually have a lighter hand in Japanese affairs after the Civil War.

That's a bit of a surprise. I half-expected that Commodore Perry brought a bit more firepower.

The PoD is in 1862, and the opening of Japan is in the 1850s.

Good but stick to B_Munro style worlds please, we need more people willing to actually put thought into worlds instead of just doing something in photoshop and thinking it's good because it's fancy.

A B_Munro-style map will be out soon.

My question is whether this is Tokugawa or Meiji Japan, or perhaps something entirely new?

A Japan which underwent an alternate Meiji modernization.

I've played enough Shogun TW to help you out
Nah, the only real changes you could make are the Shogunate forces winning the Boshin War (quite likely as they were more open to modernization and development) or the survival of the Ezo Republic.
