Excerpt from On Society, State and Economy by Marcus Allen. Written during the Endless War, On Society, State and Economy outlines the basic premises of the National Conservative ideology that would later come to dominate the Coalition of Western RepublicsHumanity is a very diverse group. We all have different cultures, different beliefs, and different nations. But, there are a few things in this world that unite all of us. One of these is government. Sure, there are areas in the areas more devastated by the Collapse that have no official state ruling over it, but even then the peoples living in that territory have their own system of government, whether it be a tribal system or a military system. Government has, in some form or another, always been with us. Now, throughout history we have adopted, and discarded, many forms of government. Tribalism, monarchy, communism, social democracy; the list is as vast as it is varied. But, even in these thousands of years that we have had government, one question remains: what is the proper role of government? The problem with this question is not that it has no answer. No, quite the opposite: the problem is that it has many answers, all of which have their disciples.
While the answers to this question are numerous, they can be broken down on the basis of the amount of economic and social control each political system advocates. For example, the anarchist want the government as limited as possible. He believes that the government has no right to take his money or order him around. The communist disagrees completely; for him, only the government can direct his life and resources properly, and to give this hefty responsibility to the individual himself is ludicrous. The National Conservative disagrees with both the libertist and the communist, believing that the state has the obligation to enforce the law, yet does not have the obligation to make sure its citizens are economically sound. The social democrat disagrees with the conservative completely. These four all claim to be right, and all claim that the other three are wrong.
But, who really is right? Which of the four ideologies, applied correctly, would benefit mankind the most? It is my conviction that conservatism is the correct ideology, because it takes advantage of economic freedom and social control to create a powerful and united citizenry. Only economic freedom can weed out the weaker in a population, and only social control can keep a population from destroying itself. The libertist has half of the equation correct: a nation under his system would allow for only the fittest to survive, but his citizens, unrestrained, would simply serve themselves, wallowing in carnal depravity.
Eventually, the citizens would turn on each other out of greed, causing complete societal collapse. Self-destruction through hedonism is the ultimate result of the libertist system. The communist is in a similar situation: his peoples are certainly united and morally sound, but by rejecting the invisible hand of capitalism, he allows his nation’s weaker peoples to thrive alongside its able population, and his system lacks any incentive for hard work. His people will slowly starve as they demand their government-assured survival. Self-destruction through weakness is the fate of the communist. The social democratic system has none of the merits of either the libertist or communist system. With a large population of impoverished citizens, all unrestrained, the social democratic system can meet its end in any number of ways, all of which undesirable. In a world where only the strong and the pure prevail, National Conservatism is the only choice for those who want to live a life in safety and prosperity.
National Conservatism is not only practical; it is also the most philosophically just of the four systems. The NatCon system makes sure its people are morally and socially pure, so that they are culturally homogenous enough to prevent hatred between them. Diversity is just another front for conflict, and removing it makes sure the people are united. Unlike capitalist competition, socially-motivated conflict does not always give victory to the strong. In such a conflict, the strong will fight strong, and weak will fight weak, and so whoever the victor is, the nation loses strong individuals and yet still keeps weak ones. Social control also allows governments to weed out any ideologies or quirks that can infect and corrupt the population from a moral and political basis, and therefore, for the sake of the current generation and those coming after it, a government that can quickly and thoroughly eliminate any practices or beliefs deemed unwholesome. A social system modeled off militaries can ensure a sense of friendship and unity within a population, whilst ensuring order. Capitalism gives men the unalienable right to do what he wishes with his resources. It not only gives the man the spoils of his hard work in full, but it also rewards the hard-working man and punishes the lazy man; justice delivered by the invisible hand of the market. No man, and no government, is able to reward the strong and punish the weak with such efficiency and thoroughness. The government also has no obligation to be the people’s nanny. There are some utilities that are best administered by the government, due to their universal use, such as roads and the military. Since these are services the entire population uses, it is only fitting for the entire population to fund it. For all other infrastructure needs, private businesses are preferable, or, in the odd situation in which they are not, the government should only have the right to fund said project with the money of those who benefit from said project. To tax freihaus drivers for bike lanes is unjust. To tax the rich to feed the poor is equally unjust. It is not the right or responsibility of the government to do such things. Implemented for long enough, conservatism strengthens the population of the nation, so that in a few decades, only the prosperous and morally sound are left to proudly call their nation home.
National Conservatism represents the proper application of government in economic and social matters. It is unappealing to many because it is ruthless with its population. While this is true, this unmerciful stance is the only way to purify and strengthen a people, and in the end only the weak in mind, body and spirit suffer. The National Conservative system is a medicine for nations, and so it does not always taste good, but in the end, the disease of laziness and moral depravity is cured. And those wise enough to work hard and be morally sound will later thank a conservative government for benefiting humanity as a whole.
