Description
A cover of beedok 's Languages of the Spartan Republic of Rome and Tianxia Union .Alright, the premise of this is very obvious. This technically has two PoDs, although the first one is earlier so you can chalk up the second one to butterflies. The first PoD is the Romans doing much better during the wars with the Sassanids, meaning the Crisis of the Third Century is averted and the Roman Empire manages to stay together. The second PoD is the Three Kingdoms Period being far more chaotic, with the three states breaking down further, a plague, and a Korean invasion thrown in to the mix. As a result, China as a unified political entity is a dead letter by the middle of the Fourth Century. This has an interesting effect on Chinese culture, as while the Sinosphere becomes divided politically, the years of war lead to the rise of a messianic, apocalyptic version of Buddhism that becomes popular among the soldiers, then among the peasants, and lastly among leaders trying to gain or keep the loyalty of the other two.
You can probably guess how history goes after this. A monotheistic version of Shiva-worship arises on the Indian subcontinent and overruns Southeast Asia, before being stopped by the Chinese. Eurasia is devastated by the Magyars, who in particular do a number on the Roman Empire and the Indian kingdoms. Religious wars spark up within China and India, and holy wars are waged between the two culture groups. The coastal Chinese states begin sending explorers around the world in search of Western trade routes, dominating Oceania and then eventually discovering the New World, while Rome stagnates. The Cantonese, then the Japanese and the Yang, colonize the New World, and said colonies eventually gain independence. The Chinese states gain dominance over the world, even influencing Rome, although they never manage to colonize Rome and Britannia directly. A republican revolution overthrows the Roman Empire, but this republic only lasts five years before the radical, collectivist-militant Sparticists overthrow the republic. The Two Oceans War, mostly between the Legalist[1] Hango Empire and its neighbors, and Britannia and Rome, destroys Chinese dominance of the world and leads to a cold war between the Japanese-speaking Nanto Republic and the autocratic Mongol Union. The Nanto successfully turn the Romans against the Mongols, and the Mongol Union collapses due to internal power struggles. The Romans quickly industrialized in the meanwhile, and are now the second largest economy on Earth. Now, the Nanto Federation is the global hegemon, but the post-Two Oceans War, post-Ice War world order is being threatened by civil war in India, the refugee crisis into China that has caused, and the growing rivalries between Nanto, Rome, and the new Mongol Republic.
A few more notes:
- The United Republics of Asia is a Japanese project. The region was colonized by Japan, but was eventually granted independence. It is a religiously diverse state, with Zoroastrianism and Shaivism being the largest religions. It does have Christian and Jewish minorities.
- Rome is officially atheistic, although Greco-Roman paganism, the Imperial Cult and Christianity survived the Sparticist Revolution and the Culture Cleansing. Many great temples were destroyed during the Cultural Cleansing, which is still a touchy subject in Rome.
- The Hango, which are a mixed Korean-Chinese state, don't like being called Legalists, and hence have adopted a very libertine attitude to just about everything.
- Dhamial was established by the Japanese after they retreated from India. A Tamil-dominated state, they manage to have dominance over the Sinhalese majority, which are kept in poverty. They have an unauthorized nuclear program, which is cause for concern.
- The Tianxia Union was established after the Two Oceans War, both as an alliance to keep the Mongols out and the Hango down, and as an economic and free trade union. It has since grown to encompass much more, and is criticized as being an attempt by Hango to create another unified Chinese Empire, which critics say will inevitably collapse.
- Dongying recently voted to leave the Tianxia Union, but they have yet to do so. It's still a controversial issue. The Yi Republic and its allies, being former Mongol-dominated states and facing the brunt of the migrant crisis, are also leading an effort to leave.

I wanted a darker take on the "prison colony" deal.

Good point. I bet if outtimer saw our Australia, they'd say it was ASB that such a functional nation-state grew out of a penal colony.
