The sword points to our future, because during a time of war, we only have a future if we fight and defeat the enemy. The wreath reminds us that we are a civilized people, and we should never forget that even in our darkest moments."

Perhaps to symbolize that glory shall only come to those who are below and with their feet on the ground. From that point of view, the humans, since the martians fly and come from the sky and stuff.
