Description
A Star Wars Legion AT-ST I painted for a competition on Pete the Wargamer 's Discord server. I won first place! The theme was festive/winter, so I went for a winterized version of the AT-ST. The backstory is that snowtroopers stationed on an icy world have decided that their big grey walkers are really visible targets for Rebel anti-armor teams, and have resorted to on the field materials to mitigate this. Thus, the AT-ST has been whitewashed, much like tanks were in real life during WWII. Of course, being hastily painted on the field, this white covering is not applied smoothly and is chipping off in many areas. To make the model more interesting, I also added pieces which would make it look more "dieselpunk," such as an actual German machine gun on the cupola[1] and a coolant tank on the side. The model was primed white in the areas which were to receive the whitewash, with the grey "undercoat" actually painted on with Citadel's Apothecary White and then a light grey. Some areas, which are not readily visible by a distant observer or are hard to reach, were primed black and painted normally. I was pretty judicious with the use of weathering powders and washes on some areas, to give the AT-ST a worn, used appearance.
For added visual interest, I used white crackle paste on the base, above an icy surface using one of Pete's own tutorials. I also took the opportunity to keep the firing guide lines on the base and making them look like cracks in the ice. I also added a downed Rebel pilot, which I purchaed from Skullforge Studios and printed at home.
I have a WIP and final gallery on imgur.
[1] Since the Star Wars movies used real life WWII guns as props, I felt this was in keeping with the spirit of the setting.
