Description Here's the layout to inks for that poster. I started with the figure, got that all blocked in then started on the perspective grid, worked out the buildings finishing off the pencils, then I inked it. I worked on this off and on so I don't know exactly how long it took me. But it was time-consuming.

I've never heard of equidistant spacing. Can you point me in the direction to find out?

Actually as somone pointed out to me I think I am wrong in calling it equidistant spacing. It's different, and it's hard to explain. I've never seen anything on the web about it.

Plague52x In reply to RyanOttley [2006-09-29 23:56:29 +0000 UTC]

So how did you learn about it? Is it like a math equation or something?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RyanOttley In reply to Plague52x [2006-09-30 02:11:18 +0000 UTC]

I learned it from Cory Walker. And I'm not sure where he learned it, maybe school. Not really a math equation but It's somewhat mathematical.

Hmm, I guess I will have to investigate into alternatives to perspective drawings. Thanks for the info, man.

hey ryan you got the inner harbor here. I see the legg mason building and the aquarium (even though its so small). So many things here im just taking my time to enjoy this.

RyanOttley In reply to 00WIZ [2006-09-28 15:34:38 +0000 UTC]

Hey thanks! Cool you can notice stuff. It's not exact, alot of it is just an interpretation of the buildings since it was such a small jpg. I think I guessed on the aquarium, the photo I had didn't even have the aquarium on it, yeah it was an old photo. But I've been to that harbor lots of times so I remembered some stuff.

00WIZ In reply to RyanOttley [2006-09-28 16:08:17 +0000 UTC]

your interpretations of the buildings is good. You must know that everything in a comic can't be spot on it has to be some part make believe. That must have been a very old photo if it didnt have that in it so im guessing that photo must be over 25 year old. I have to ask you these two question do you keep a morgue file for all your references ? Also can you teach me how to draw buildings? please

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RyanOttley In reply to 00WIZ [2006-09-28 16:51:27 +0000 UTC]

No I can't teach you to draw buildings. And I use to keep some reference on file but I'm mainly a google guy now. I absolutely HATE looking up reference though.

holy shinto.

nice to see you work out everything in pencil first. you are human. Do you pencil and ink one page a day (not this piece, but the average comic page)? That's a pretty tough schedule.. hopefully you are getting a combined rate for that... hopefully?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RyanOttley In reply to bearmantooth [2006-09-28 15:31:47 +0000 UTC]

I get percentage. And I do roughly about a page a day.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bearmantooth In reply to RyanOttley [2006-09-28 17:42:14 +0000 UTC]

A percentage? How does that work? And does it work better than a regular page rate? I've never heard of getting a percentage before.

That's awesome that you can do a page a day. Have you ever thought some day that you would slow down and maybe just pencil a page a day and have someone else ink. Just to maybe embellish the pencils more? Not that you need to, but maybe as a stylistic change or what not?

I have had an inker for four issues. It was great. I might do it again someday. And Image is an independant company, every creator owns thier work completely, so they get the full profits and split them up in percentages for the team.

Nicely done! Gives a great sense of height. Did you have any particular references for the cityscape?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RyanOttley In reply to Inkthinker [2006-09-28 00:57:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, just something off of Google. Of course I didn't follow it exactly, the photo is copyrighted, but it's a photo of Baltimore's inner harbor. Baltimore is where Mark lives. Just so ya know.

Inkthinker In reply to RyanOttley [2006-09-28 09:34:07 +0000 UTC]

No, I'm all about the reference. You don't have to copy it line for line, but it really makes the difference in getting that sense of detail and distance done right. It can be the difference between looking like something, and feeling like something.

mistakendestiny [2006-09-28 00:40:47 +0000 UTC]

how do you manage the perspective on something like that? the vanashing point must be way off the page...do you stick a few extra pieces of paper on just for the vanashing point? or is there another way?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RyanOttley In reply to mistakendestiny [2006-09-28 00:59:17 +0000 UTC]

There's another way, I never saw the actual vanishing points because they are WAY off the page. I use equidistant spacing. It's much too hard to explain. Come over and I'll show you.

Some really nice work. I really like how the landscape recedes into the background, with the details getting smaller and smaller, and the linework getting more and more fine.

If I had any criticism, I would only say maybe make the lines around the clouds a little finer. They look a bit too heavy.

OMG bro you are one of the most talented guys in the industry today. I am just floored at all the work you do and the quality. You are a work horse and I appreciate it. I wish someone would explain the perspective grind in a fashion I could understand because I can never get mine to work right. You did an awesome job.

Thanks a ton for the kind words bro. I wish I could type out a good explanation for ya but the best way to learn it is to be shown. I should record myself and put it on youtube or somethin. SO many people ask about the perspective.
