I am seriously grateful that you post your pencil to ink artworks..!! man!! it helps people like me who really struggle with penciling!! Super THANKS

great work!!

*with the rough pencils, you ink it immediately dont you - well how about the details - how do you add them?? do you just have everything in your head that you dont need to pencil it down first?! do you even use references???

^_^ just asking...

I'm just trying to skip un-needed work. If I added detail in the pencils then that means I'd be drawing it twice once I inked over it. So I decided I'll draw details once. The sketchy pencils I use just to give me enough info that I can start on inks. I use reference when needed. For example sometimes I want a certain idea on cars or buildings so they don't all end up looking the same. Of course I HATE looking up reference, I'm very lazy that way. So I don't do it as much as I should. But for issue 40 it was all spaceships and that kind of thing, so no reference was needed.

Comic shops. Some bookstores. Some websites that sell comics. Like amazon.com, just type in Invincible.

awesome layouts... ahhh...now I see how you work on your inks. The rough pencils is just an indication for you to throw in the details later on the inks.
That's a lot of confidence there, Ryan... I guess after working on so many pages all these years has given you the knowledge to believe in your lines.

Wish I can be like that someday.

hey bro awesome shit. do you do any type of lightboxing with your roughs at all? or do you just have an idea, rough it out on comic paper and then just ink on top of it? just kinda like a 2 step process?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RyanOttley In reply to SCOTTeFRESH [2007-04-20 20:37:16 +0000 UTC]

Nope. Not a fan of lightboxing. Pencil than ink, all on one paper.

Hey wya, your stuff is looking awesome.

I gotta ask though, I have been following your new approach to penciling and inking, do you recommend this approach for beginners as well? Or do you think a penciller should first start by doing tight pencils and as they get confident with their style they should over on to layouts and then inking them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RyanOttley In reply to Computron2005 [2007-04-20 20:36:22 +0000 UTC]

No. It took a while to get use to. I wouldn't recommend it for beginners.

robo-V [2007-04-20 18:53:04 +0000 UTC]

do you perfer to work that loosely or is that just what you need when inking yourself? i have been working through a project and found that i perferred how the pages turned out when i drew them a lot looser than when they were tighter. with tighter images i feel less of the ability to monkey with them. do you have pointers for how to switch between tighter images and loose ones? i ask because i know that sometimes i am not going to be able to ink my own stuff or something like that.
thanks

RyanOttley In reply to robo-V [2007-04-20 20:35:17 +0000 UTC]

If someone is inking me I tighten up the pencils. If I ink myself, then yeah, I keep it loose. I do tighten up covers a little bit more than pages though. So there is less guess work.

yep. I went straight to inks right after the pencils. I keep it sketchy, I really don't need much info if I'm inking it myself, just enough to get by.
