I would have said it's pretty complete as it is. It's a great drawing the contrast of black n grey work well with the colour.
I really like it

if you like Japanese designs then by a book called bushido legacy of the Japanese tattoo [link] an yes the dragon should be clutching the orb if the bodys disappearing behind a wave the head should be higher or the body should be flowing like a 'c' shape, people have commented about the 1 leg 1 arm but no has said they are small an not tied to the body in the traditional sence, also the waves look compressed. as i said get that book its got full body suites of tratidial japanese tattoos by Horiyoshi III an if you dont know who that is, he is considered one of the greatest tattoo masters ever i learnt allot about the structure of dragons an waves an other aspects of traditional japanese tattoo,

ive heard about that book. ill look into getting it.
living here in japan, there are so many japanese published books that really help with tattoo designs. i buy them constantly.

im really not trying to go full out traditional. yes i am trying to keep it in mind but im really going for my own look. kinda....modernizing the traditional style.

thanks for the critique! like i said in other comments, i do agree with body layout mistakes.

again thanks!

only one person iv seen kind of modernise the traditional japanese tattoo, shige [link] but you gotta keep in mind its drawn that way for a reason!!

an shige work proves this, they look good but don't hold up as well as say Horiyoshi's tattoos over time, which just stay perfect.

jealous of the japanese books tho their a pain to get here iv been after esoteric sanskrit books an mantra books too, some folk lore books ect. ill ave to get some if i ever mange to get to japan.

the orbs are pearls of wisdome. great job on the face and horns. looks good, but i'm curious as to what's happening with the body? breaks a little odd to fit on a body part also. with a little attention to that kind of detail you'll go a long way.

the body is suppose to disappear behind the head and water. on the line work it looked good, but once i started shading it wasnt so great.

thankyou for your critique!

I love the shading work, excellent job. great use of traditional colors. I think the placement of the legs need to be reconsidered. From what I can tell there is one leg on two totally different parts of the body.
I agree with using the orb, but maybe it should look more like the dragon is clutching it verses just putting his hand on it.
It looks as though the body curves up and under the head but then just stops, then the neck is coming from the side. Im not sure where the rest of is or is supposed to be.

Other than that, I love the dragons face, very traditional and spot on with the bright beard. Kudos!

i totally agree with you on the legs and body.

thanks!

the green circle is an orb, traditional dragon paintings will usually have one, very nicely done btw

its a orb or pearl, representing wisdom or the soul of the dragon. they are sometimes blue or green. ive even seen a few red ones that look pretty rad.
