Yeah...I don't really care how it looks. So long it gives off some sort of fantasy feel to it.

Can't you just stop? I'm just saying my own goddamn opinion. If I really want some realistic wings, I can find some PLUS I fave some a while back. Does that make you happy? I didn't fave these piece, just commenting, ok?

i know others have already commented this but i feel the need to agree. The anatomy just ruins this. I don't care if its 'not a real wing'. Fantasy becomes believable when it has foundations in reality. How do you expect anyone to look at something you've created and think, 'Yeah that could actually exist' when the anatomy is wrong in literally every way?

Artistically speaking its well drawn and eye catching, but it falls short because of lack of believability.

Then again, he's just trying to showcase the feathers. You're looking passed his focus in order to nitpick on things that he already knew were incorrect.

Syvaender In reply to AiDeeKay [2013-12-03 23:04:43 +0000 UTC]

I don't think the feathers in this are any better than the winganatomy. Even the subject this tutorial is trying to cover is weakly executed.

AiDeeKay In reply to Syvaender [2013-12-04 04:19:17 +0000 UTC]

I beg to differ. I think the feathers look very nice and the fact that ryky
gave an example as to which direction the feathers should be helped a lot.
I guess it's all in the perspective and how much someone wants to bash
someone else's hard work.

umbrulla In reply to AiDeeKay [2013-12-04 06:36:17 +0000 UTC]

If youre trying to justfy this tutorial by the feathers, then you are sadly mistaken.

Feathers are directed for aerodynamics, and patterened for air suspension, while these feathers seem to be sticking out in every direction, as well as growing out from no place on the "wing" that seems to exist. feathers dont grow out from other feathers and do not stick out in little sideways tufts. think of it like a quilt or sheet with a bunch of massive holes.
if anything
and i mean ANYTHING, be it bird or cute anime girl, tried to use this feather structure they would plummet.
feather construction is and important and careful art, birds often have to spend a good amount of time cleaning and rearranging them into comfortable functioning positions.

This isnt a wing tutorial, and this isnt even a feather tutorial, if you want to draw a proper or even mildly believeable feather structure, you need to know where the feathers are placed on the wing, as well as how they are bent and directed.

They should've called this a "Feather Tutorial" in that case, then.

AiDeeKay In reply to St-Fisch [2013-12-04 04:19:40 +0000 UTC]

Maybe he should have, but he didn't. Just means that people should
be more mindful of the description as well.

Skelefrog In reply to AiDeeKay [2013-12-03 22:55:45 +0000 UTC]

It's not really "nitpicking" at all. Anatomy is key, unless you're drawing stylistically. Most of ryky's tutorials try to be anatomically correct or at least with minimal stylization (ie. the intense reflection in the eyes, the glow in the sky, etc.)
As carolinalang said, you have to know the rules before you can break them.

I think I speak for most when I say that ryky could have put a bit more effort into the anatomy.

AiDeeKay In reply to Skelefrog [2013-12-04 04:18:02 +0000 UTC]

But ryky didn't. Don't see why people need to continually tell him that the anatomy is wrong
when he stated in the description that he knows they are. Seems rather nitpicky to me.

I believe you mean:
"Wow, honestly? Wow."

Also, yes. A tutorial is meant to teach people how to draw.
You can't fly with those wings when a whole bone is missing. You might as well be a deformed chicken.

Better than the standard FiM cartoony wings...

FellFallow In reply to ryky [2013-12-03 22:35:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you have to know the rules before you can break them. Doing a characature of a wing for example is fine, if you actually know how to structure the wing itself. Wings are not triangular in this manner, ever.

As LadyCanisLupus said, people will take this as a realistic wing, which is a bad way to teach them. If you were showcasing the feathers, you should have just done a patch of them instead of saying it's a 'wing' tutorial.

If you use your own hand and pretend your fingers are long primary feathers, and the rest of your own arm is a birds wing, it'll really help!
Just do the funky chicken dance with your fingers as parallel to your forearm as possible~♥

hollyoakhill In reply to ryky [2013-12-03 20:51:53 +0000 UTC]

You should consider studying some references and learn from realism. Stylized art is nice and great, but you will see that even if it's not realistic, the basic knowledge of anatomy and physics will do you good. Then it'll be wayy easier to draw them... and even the stylized, unrealistic ones from memory will look true.

But if you choose to go without references, then try to draw the wings in a more rectangular shape, rather than triangular. I'm still severely lacking in bird knowledge myself, but i do know that a bird can't fly if it's whole body weight rests on it's wingtips.

If you're confused or need some help in the area whatsoever, don't be afraid to note me and I'll help you any way I can.

BrittaM In reply to hollyoakhill [2013-12-04 00:59:00 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, I have seen soooo many paintings and drawings where the colouring and detail is amazing, but the anatomy of one thing or other (wings are a particular offender, but limbs, torsos, etc) is so far off as to make it look bad.

As far as stylisation goes, you have to know the rules before you can break them.
