I don't know a whole lot about the Metroid series, just enough to understand a few basics...apart from Samus looking hot in the Zero Suit.
I do have the original Metroid and Super Metroid on Virtual Console but I got stuck and actually gave up close to the beginning. 
So, with what I do understand about the series, story-wise, I created a simple shot of Samus going over upgrades to her suit with some scientists...I do think I could have picked a slightly more exciting-looking spot for the shot, though...

1) This looks pretty damn good.
2) I actually know quite a bit about the Metroid series, and she really got very few upgrades to her suit besides the weapons you get in every game, and the expansions.
So, this is quite a rare occurance for her.

Is it me, or is the shading on her suit a lot like Super Mario Galaxy's?

Well, SMG did have phong and normal mapping with Rim Lighting in it, so yeah, it does have a similar apperance.

And the contrasting colours remind me of it too.

Like you, I don't know much about Metroid. The closest I do have is playing a demo of Super Metroid in Brawl's Masterpiece mode and that's it. Other M has caught my interest though, plus with the release of all three Prime games on one Wii disc... I may ask for that for Christmas or something.

Because I'm a metroid nerd, I need to point out that the scientists actually don't have alot of knowledge of her suit, what with it being of alien design. It can just kinda incorporate most programs and parts into itself, being modular and all.
Also, Where'd you get stuck in Super?

Some part close to the beginning with a fire room or something...I can't remember any more...
If there's one Metroid game that truly captures my interest, though, it's "Other M".

Ohh, I'll bet I know what happened. Did you take the elevator down to Norfair before you got the Varia suit?
If you drop to the bottom of the shaft with the elevator in it in Norfair, and take the door on the left, you'll go through a room with an E tank, some critters, and a missile pack, that will let you get to the high-jump boots. With that, you can go back up the elevator to Brinstar, shoot out the wall on the right side of the upper elevator room, and make the jump to the blue rock face and the door behind it. From there, you can find your way through to Kraid, and defeat him for the Varia suit.
