Description
I know I'm not the only one who wants this. Nothing could possibly top Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, so why NOT hit reset on the franchise? This would work especially well if Sakurai is done with the franchise. Just get someone else to direct it. Though that would mean someone other than Kirby would be the subject of nepotism... Hmm, what if they got the Tekken devs to make it? Ugh, I digress. The three things I want in the hypothetical next Smash game are: Less returning characters, more new characters, and a complete overhaul of the movesets. Now, I know why the movesets never changed much for 5 games. People like the movesets. Mario works as an all-around character for new players, Donkey Kong works as a powerhouse, and Kirby is the most perfect boy. We can keep those movesets, but what if we had an option to change the playstyle? Like the custom specials from Smash 4, but instead of just swapping out your special moves, you pick one of, say, three unique movesets that each encompass what the fighter represents. For example, along with Mario's regular moveset, he has a power-up themed moveset, and a sports moveset. They would all still make Mario the all-around fighter, but each moveset focuses a bit on something else. Kinda like... Ryu and Kage from Street Fighter? Just to add some variety.
Speaking of Ryu and Kage, I think the next game should simply have Echo Fighters share the same slot by default, just so there's more space for new characters. Since everyone likes Melee, we'll use the Melee roster size as the standard. Obviously the original 12 will return, and we'll have up to four fighters for each franchise. Now buckle up!
Super Mario - Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, and Toad as a secret character. This gives us the four main protagonists.
Donkey Kong - Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, King K. Rool, and Funky Kong. Funky would be like the Luigi of Donkey Kong. Some moves are similar, making him a semi-clone, but he's still a unique fighter. Instead of punches, Funky uses things like the coconut gun and barrel cannons. As for Diddy, I think Dixie should join him as a tag team.
Legend of Zelda - Link, Zelda, Sheik, and Ganondorf. I'm sorry to any Skull Kid fans or Ghirahim fans, but this is probably all we're gonna get. As for Young Link and Toon Link, have there be an option to replace Link with either of them on the selection screen. They may not be true Echoes, but I think it'll be fine if all three share a slot.
Metroid - Samus (and Dark Samus), Zero Suit Samus, and Ridley. I considered adding a Space Pirate, being a hybrid of Samus' enemies like what Piranha Plant was, but then I thought of other characters who I felt deserve the slot more. Space Pirate could still be a pre-order DLC, just like Piranha Plant.
Yoshi - Just Yoshi. I personally want Kamek and the Baby Mario Bros, but I'm trying to be realistic. I can't play favorites, at least not for now.
Kirby - Kirby, Meta Knight, King Dedede... *deep breath* AND BANDANA DEE! Every Kirby and Smash fan I've heard from secretly wants this boy in Smash. He's the fourth wheel of the Kirby car, so put him in. Why tf not?
Star Fox - Fox, Falco, and Wolf. No new characters, sorry. Also, I think they're all different enough to not be considered Echoes. MAYBE we could give Fox a moveset that uses bombs and missiles, or one that gives him Krystal's staff instead of his blaster. I'm sorry Krystal fans, I would've put her in but I forgor.
Pokémon - Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Charizard, Mewtwo... here we go... and a NEW Pokémon Trainer. I think it's time for there to be a new one. Let's go with the most recent one, the Galarian Trainer. If I were to pick which Pokémon they'd use, I'd go with Scorbunny, Drizzile, and "Grass Monkey that Funky Monkey" Rillaboom.
F-Zero - Captain Falcon. Sorry, Samurai Goroh fans.
Mother - Ness and Lucas. Sorry, Pokey fans. Although, I'd love to see Ninten as an alternate costume or Echo Fighter for Ness.
Sonic - THIS is why I wanted to make this image, because a Smash reboot would be the perfect opportunity to prioritize SONIC! Give Sonic a new moveset that doesn't make him feel like an Echo Fighter for the Ball from Pinball, have Classic Sonic be an alternate costume, and of course, ADD MORE SONIC CHARACTERS! We're going with Tails, Knuckles, Eggman, and Shadow as a secret character.
And for the last two returning characters, Pit and Ice Climbers. These were my two favorite characters from Brawl, so I guess that's the favoritism.
NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHING
Rayman - He was SO CLOSE to being added! I'm not even a Rayman fan, and I feel blueballed. That's an exaggeration. Really, he's one of two third-party characters who I think should've been added a long time ago. The other one being...
Nightmare - If Namco Bandai co-develops this game, they're gonna put in one of their characters. They most likely would put in Pac-Man or Heihachi, but I want Nightmare. Haha! That Tekken reference was a red herring! Maybe Nightmare could be the main villain of the story mode. Oh yeah, there NEEDS to be a story mode. And not that World of Light crap, I want the feeling I got from Subspace Emissary. I want cinematic cutscenes, and sidescrolling stages, and beat-em-up style gameplay! Is that asking too much?
Tiki - Let's take it back to normalcy... with Fire Emblem. You may have noticed that Marth and Ike aren't here. I considered heavily just putting in Marth and having all the other anime swordfighters be his Echoes, but again, I was running out of space. Also, since this is a reboot, this is an opportunity to return to the time when there were only two Fire Emblem characters in Smash. Since we've had our fill of swordfighters, let's go with a spellcaster. Tiki is one of the few recurring characters, being a 1000 year old dragon that looks like a child... don't think about it.
Anna - Tiki's not the most recurring character, though. That would be Anna, the merchant with an inexplicable number of sisters. Her moveset could be similar to Villager's, throwing out swords, and tomes, and random bullshit. Her Final Smash could be like Robin's, but instead of summoning Chrom, she summons a bunch of mercenaries, leaning into the idea of her being a thrifty merchant.
Zero - This is why I named this hypothetical game, Super Smash Bros. Zero! We don't have Mega Man, but we do have the robot designed to destroy Mega Man. I don't have to say much about Zero, he's a popular character who's appeared in other fighting games.
Crash - Finally, we have Crash Bandicoot. It seems like Microsoft adding their IP's to Smash is a new tradition, so why not? Plus, Crash was the rival to both Mario and Sonic during the 64-bit era. Just imagine the reveal trailer: Crash, Mario, and Sonic, all charging towards each other in a three-man showdown.
Now if you feel like that's still not enough fighters for a sequel, or there are some characters you think NEED to be in the next game, don't worry. There's still room for secret characters and DLC.
