Description
It's been a while since I've posted any updates on this Retro ultralight design, [link] so it's about time I uploaded this one. This is a slightly revised/cleaned up version of the sketches I did while designing this vehicle.
Pencil on paper tweaked in PS.
Hope it makes sense.

Those Ultralights of yours are a really great piece of design. Tell me, what are the exact dimensions of those machines?

Thanks! I'm not big on measurement but the main body is roughly the same as a motor bike's frame - with out the wheels. The wings are hopefully long enough to provide lift. No real physics here, just looks good on paper kinda thing.

what would you say if I could build this??? thinking of what I could do with my wrecked R1 street bike and this looks fun

That would be a sight to see, but don't count on it being air worthy though.

I have been doing research and have found the right angle for the wings. I own a auto mechanics shop and have been looking for something fun to do with planes. this will be fun. I will post pictures as we go just so you can participate in the creation of your idea

Cool! No one's ever offered to do a full sized version of this design, ever! I'd love to see how this progress!

I also have a supercharged street bike motor with a auto BMW trans thinking I might have to thicken the wings and reduce the canards but might just look at changing the tails a little can you do a design of the steering?

This is just a base design and you're free to do any modification. Have fun!

Yes, I've been checking out your brilliant ship designs. I especially dig the Scorbat Bravo Class. Hope I can somehow include it in the Tubal image I'm now working on.

sweet. the scorbat bravo class is the remake of the alpha class and I'm still tying to figure what its other views look like. I've got top and bottom so far.

Designing in 3D IS quite tricky.
I usually design my vehicles viewed from the sides then figure out the rest later on - not the best approach I believe.

thus far I've found that the side and front views are the hardest for me. top and bottom and realativily easy

Thank you! I've seen your 3D model of my retro bike. It's looking good so far.
You may do a 3D model of this one if you like.

this makes me want to try to build one and see if it has enough lift to get off the ground

This design is purely aesthetic. I don't really think it would actually work but still I wonder...

Tell me that somebody is 3D modeling this! If you don't mind, maybe I'll take a stab at it when I get some time. Always really liked that picture.

nikolai60 want's to build one but everybody's welcome to do their own version. It would be interesting to see it evolve even further.

You shouldn't be! It was always an excellent concept. I'm glad it's so popular.
Maybe you should do another full color illustration of it? From another angle, with a different paint scheme... and with landing gear deployed?

s2ka In reply to Rob-Cavanna [2009-12-12 15:31:50 +0000 UTC]
I suppose this one should be developed further and a few have already offered to do their own version - it's gonna evolve into a number of different species I'm sure.

It would be awesome to see further development of this great idea.. Imagine a lineup of pinup pilot hotties posing beside their own unique ultralight fliers!
From an engineering point of view, I feel like the two tails might like to have some vertical stabilizers and rudders? Can't complain about this very balanced design tho. Feels wrong to crit.
π: 0 β©: 1
s2ka In reply to Rob-Cavanna [2009-12-21 16:42:56 +0000 UTC]
I am watching out for that!
I designed the two tails/winglets to function as stabilizer/elevators but I guess it would help to add more size to them or as you suggest an additional rudder. I'd probably add one on the improved version in the future. Or perhaps someone else will think of a better setup that would look even cooler!
