Description The Kelpie is one of Kairegorn's most dangerous wild beasts. Though it resembles a horse, it is actually a semi-aquatic reptile. Covered in algae that resembles brown fur, the kelpie waits for passing prey such as wolves, big cats and dinosaurs to wander close so that it can overpower and drag them to a watery grave, an illusion it further creates by pretending to graze. Unfortunately, this strategy also works on humans, elves and dwarves, who find it difficult to see the difference until it is often too late. Because of this, it is seen as an evil beast and great care is taken to avoid areas where it might be present. Dragons however find them to quite delicious and will gladly drive kelpies off or eat them if they show up near humanoid habitations.

A black and white drawing of the Kelpie. Very much inspired by TalonV's horses, it took a very long time and numerous trial and error sketches to get right.

If a kelpie is a reptile then why does it have ears? Personally, I think that it is a relative of ambulocetus & andrewsarchus that survived till modern times by exploiting a freshwater niche where it has little competition from other big animals. (I'm talking about real-life kelpie, not this one - this one is a reptile, I get it.)

And as for dragons finding kelpies delicious? Dragons may be wise, but they also eat anything and anyone, so I am not particularly surprised by these news.

The ears are not ears per say, but rather skin flaps that resemble ears to further the illusion. I may also do another kelpie species based on your idea for something else entirely.

Also, Kairegornan Dragons may eat almost anything, but in Kairegorn most good dragons do not eat humans. Only evil ones like Sauros and Shrike eat humans along with others of their own kind.

I think they can be tamed, but it probably would need to be an juvenile to have any success.
