Description
"Was that a wolf?""No... that's something bigger. That's a reuzewolven, boy. Keep on your guard, and be sure to look up in the trees, too. They normally don't like to eat people, but they sure as hell don't like intruders." -Anonymous farmer to his son while trying to hunt deer in the forest after hearing a reuzewolven pack's howls.
The reuzewolven (Canis lupotitanis) is a gigantic wolf that inhabits wild areas across Kairegorn. As tall as a horse and weighing up to 1500 pounds, these fearsome wild canids are the dog equivalent of a big cat: they can climb trees, have long front claws and can swipe with their paws just as lions and tigers can. Traveling in packs of up to forty, they feed on prey from the size of deer to animals as big as an Edmontosaurus. Their ability to climb is aided by locking ankles and wrists, and in large trees, they are just as agile as a gray fox, the only other arboreal canid in Kairegorn. Tree-climbing is especially useful to these wolves when pursuing arboreal horses in the Forest of Dryd, one of their favorite prey items.
Pests, predators, symbols, icons, legends; Reuzewolven are all these to Kairegorn’s humanoid populace. Kairegorn’s largest wolf species and one of the largest mammalian predators in Kairegorn save for the Panzer-Bear (a subspecies of grizzly capable of growing to 2 tons) and the Shifu tiger (which outweighs the wolves by several hundred pounds and is longer), the Reuzewolven is identifiable by its heavily muscled torso, its thick and soft, beautiful fur coat, and its long, bushy tail. In color, it can be black, to reddish-brown to gray and most beautifully of all, pure white. Its jaws are capable of crushing bone, and it is possessed of a formidable endurance even greater than that of the gray wolf, as, like hyenas, it is able to pursue prey for miles without tiring. It is responsible for more attacks on livestock than any other wolf species alive in Kairegorn, and on rare occasions, it has attacked, killed and eaten humanoids. Interestingly, wild reuzewolven are often fascinated with human doors, and often like to sharpen their front claws on them, leaving marks in the night for surprised residents to find. This and their unusual appearance often leads them to be mistaken for werewolves, which are smaller and more benevolent, as werewolves are humans that can transform into wolves, and are able to speak. Reuzewolven cannot.
Reuzewolven mate for life, and raise litters of up to 6 pups. Reuzewolven are also occasionally domesticated, usually by elves, and more rarely, dwarves and humans, that raise them as pups. In these cases, they generally make loyal pets, but cannot be ridden, as they do not take well to being used like a horse. They are also intelligent enough to understand human speech and will obey any command if treated with love and respect. Dragons both respect reuzewolven and consider them a tasty snack if they happen to catch one. Young dragons often choose reuzewolven as the first animals they hunt as a rite of passage when first learning how to kill their prey, as the reuzewolven is a powerful and worthy opponent that does not run from a fight unless it has no other choice.
Kairegorn's giant wolf species just got a revamp to its appearance. I wanted it a bit more wolf-like and realistic, as the first drawing in my opinion, is terrible. As you can see by the claws and longer tail, it's also very un-wolflike. As such, I feel like I did the beast a lot more justice.
