Description

Seen in the Akeley Hall of African Mammals, at the American Museum of Natural History. On this scene, a herd of African bush elephants make their way forward to green pastures. Leading this herd is the matriarch (the female leader) as she is the most experienced and wisest of the bunch. She has the most knowledge and memory of the routes they take on their migrations. Therefore, every elephant in the herd looks up to her, depending on her for guidance and direction. Aside her is a youngster growing her tusks and behind them is a trumpeting bull (though it is strange since bulls usually leave the herd during their teenage years and either join other males in bachelor herds or roam the land alone).
