Even when young, Peli was a gracious keeper of the reduced. From day one as a bounty hunter, Peli pledged to be fair with all subjects, even going so far as to cut them all a special pactβ a sort of bargain with the red headed hunter. The Inchlings (official Light designation of the reduced prisoners) would be given immediate freedom and their past deeds forgiven if they can overcome their smallness and take on Peli.Welllll.... As it turns out for those Inchlings, Peli is a whopping six feet and six inches taller than they are and so she's got a mighty high horse to be on. Most of the time, those who take up the challenge give up embarrassingly the second the terms pass Peli's lips. Some try to run and hide...
...And eventually do get caught once more.

Anywho, what do you think of the concept of the Inchling?

Shrunken people are nothing new, but the name is creative.

Well a regularly shrunk being is just that.
But Inchling is a permanent statusβ not a permanent size change, just a LABEL. It's somewhat comparable to a convict being released from prison and still being referred to as a felon. Make sense?

So even if that person were to eventually become a giant after leaving their sentence, they will still be identified as such?

Yes.
It's a label that identifies a previous offender to the Lights. Now, that's not to say they'd be harassed or anything; but if an Inchling is once again captured in the future, a stricter penalty is placed upon them. Usually that's a two year sentence, and this time, NO MEMORY is wiped clean.

It's important because when Peli falls in love with one of her Inchlings, even her own inner circle is against the idea.

Peli does ignore them, but it hurts her feelings to think that some would disown her for liking a Human, especially an Inchling.

Then again, there is Peli's actual familyβ dismissing Peli and her desire to be accepted.

It's really just driven by Peli's desire to be accepted. I have told you about making stories of individual characters to help bring them up- well this story is going to be Peli's story. All her life she had been treated as an outcast, a weirdo, a (believe it or not) hick from the countryside, and just a wannabe and perhaps effete dandy.
So when she falls in love with this Human and her friends and family scorn her for the decisionβ she effectively loses her temper with them.

It would depend on the person. I have been betrayed by friends that I have known for years (Some of which have stolen from me, sexually harassed members of my family, etc), but I would have no problem ending friendships or chewing out people with such backwards thinking.

As it turns out, the only true friends that Peli has are the ones that were toughest on her as a kid.
