For the second assignment in my illustration class, I was asked to create three editorial drawings that all focused on a shared theme. The professor encouraged us to do topics we felt strongly about and could be considered controversial. This invitation to be bold led me to go with a topic that is of somewhat interest to me and offered lots of creative inspiration: Disney. Specifically, shady Disney.

Those who follow pop culture news may be aware of Disney’s…questionable business practices that have been coming to light in recent times. Whether it’s collaborating with the Chinese government and filming its live action Mulan movie near internment camps or tailoring its movies and promotional material to please the CCP, it seems Mickey has been getting a bit chummy with the authoritarian government of China in recent years. So chummy, in fact, that even the government has started questioning where the mouse’s loyalties lie. But perhaps this shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering that Disney has been raking in quite a lot of money from showing its films in China. At what cost its ethical compromises will come, only time will tell. But right now, Bob Iger, chairman and former CEO of Disney, is being considered for the position of US ambassador to China . Should anyone be surprised?
The three editorial drawings presented here delve into the nature of modern Disney and are probably the most political my drawings on DA will ever get. The aim of the editorials is not to vilify regular Chinese civilians or shame anyone who is a fan of Disney or has given the company business in any form (I like some things by Disney myself). Rather, the idea is to get the viewer thinking, maybe even do their own research and come to their own conclusions.
