Description
I always thought I knew you well
If someone asked me I could tell
Who you were, but something changed
That feeling couldn't be erased
You told me "Nothing's wrong."
And then you just walked along
With those shadows in your eyes
The distance between us grew by miles
I had a glimpse behind your mask
Now there are questions I want to ask
But I don't know what to say
I should stand in front of you
I should try get through to you
But I just walk away
The whole night I lay on my bed
The thoughts were spinning in my head
I tried to fathom what it means
Or how I could look at you now, at least
Following a path this low
Finding things you didn't show
There are secrets better not to know.
I had a glimpse behind your mask
There were questions I should’ve asked
But I didn't know what to say
I should have stood in front of you
I should have tried get through to you
But I just walked away.
This was a collaborated drawing between and me for the Undertale AU Handplates by .
Skellyd00d did Alphys, the lighting and shading, and the void monster's tendrils at the edges, while I contributed the drawing's concept, Gaster, the base coloring, and the background. Those of you who have been watching me or Skelly for longer might remember we did another collab drawing in the past .
The shadow beneath Alphys and Gaster was actually a later addition I made when I got hit by some inspiration, but Skellydood helped enhance it by giving it that nice gradient.
This drawing is also on her DA, by the way.
Do consider checking out her art if you haven't already. She does a lot of cute Undertale and Handplates content.
As for the lovely poem above, it was composed by just for this drawing, with some modifications by moi. Thank you so much for the poem Kira! It really adds to the drawing
Due to academic responsibilites on both our ends and general life happenings, getting together to make this collab happen was not an easy task; I think it was a year ago that I first presented Skelly with the concept art for the drawing. But the end results were well worth it, and it was an honor working with you, Skelly. I think what we have here turned out great, and it's so cool to see what our combined talents were able to produce. Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to work with you. <3
About the Drawing:
It's basically a sequel to the previous collab Like Total Losers. It both represents and speculates over Alphys and Gaster's relationship after the former starts to realize what her colleague has done over the course of the series. The drawing doesn't have a logical time placement in regards to the events that took place before and after Gaster's fall and is meant to be more of an abstract, symbolic nature.
Where Alphys and Gaster were once great friends, watching anime together and enjoying each other's company, Gaster's choice to carry out a project he knew Alphys would have never wanted him to do and to shut her out of his increasingly secretive life has wounded their friendship, hence why they have their backs turned to each other. Alphys' trust and adoration for one of the only friends she ever had has been utterly betrayed, and she now feels like she barely knows him. In this sense, Gaster going from his normal head as seen in the last drawing to the lost soul head here symbolizes not only the physical, literal loss of her friend she will experience when he falls into the Core and is erased, but the psychological and figurative loss as well. All that remains of her friend's former self now is a shadow, and the Void that will take him away from her forever has already begun to creep into their lives. In the midst of the confusion, hurt, and shock Alphys feels, perhaps a part of her also secretly blames herself for Gaster's demise--If she had only asked him about what she discovered in his lab instead of going behind his back, if she had only tried harder and sooner to get through to him when she first sensed something wasn't right....in the end, both feel guilt and regret for their own reasons.

Handplates in general tends to be a very sad series at times.
And thanks.

Thanks. You could say your own amazing lyric paintings drove the inspiration behind this.

I...kind of picture Alphys and post-accident Gaster having a moment like the one in the ending of "The Sixth Sense"

Oh man, the details, the poem, it all makes it feel very emotional and beautiful.
It's really nicely done.
Your styles are actually very similar to one another.

Aaaa, thank you! I've always longed to achieve the kind of emotional effect Zarla's lyric illustration paintings have for me, so if I managed to achieve that, I'm very, very happy to hear that. Also, I always loved the sad-sweet relationship between Gaster and Alphys in Handplates and felt it deserved some fanart, so I guess this drawing achieved two goals at once. I owe a big thanks to both Skellyd00d and KiraKiraNet for this piece though, and you could say it was ultimately a collaboration of three people in that sense.
Well, we do both have a "cartoony" style, so I guess it would make sense that they'd be similar to each other. Maybe that's why they blend together so well.

Oh my gosh, you commented? : D
And thanks; I'm glad you like it. It only took an entire year to complete it (if not longer, considering that I was still in my last semester of high school when we first discussed doing another collaboration), but it was worth it, haha.
Thank you for giving us this great poem. I think it really adds to the emotion of the picture. When I showed the poem to Skellyd00d, she said it was beautiful. : 3
I'm glad you don't mind the editing job I did with it. I didn't want to change your work too much from the original, but I did slightly alter a word or a line here and there, etc., to help make the poem more grammatically correct and to help it flow better.
