Description I've made a tutorial for how to make a Vocaloid headset. Feel free to use it. If there are any other tutorials that you'd like to see, let me know and I'll see what can do! <3

EDIT: I've decided to include Frequently Asked Questions in this description since I've gotten so many of the same questions. ^^ I'll add more questions as they come up. Hopefully this will help clear things up. If you ask a question that is in the FAQ's area, I'll be less likely to answer. Sorry. :<

SECOND EDIT: suggested putting a glow-in-the-dark paint on the yellow and blue foam to make it glow. I think it's a good idea and definitely worth a shot!

FAQ:

Q.: How are the ear pieces attached to the headband?
A.: I made a small indent into the ear pieces. Then, I put a heavy duty glue (like E-6000 or Liquid Fusion) into the indent and pressed the headband into it. I held it there until it held on its own (about 30 minutes); then, I let it fully cure, which took about 24 hours.

Q.: How did you make your bow?
A.: I now have a tutorial for that as well! : D [link]

Q.: How did you attach the bow to the headset?
A.: The headset and the bow are actually 100% separate. In all the official reference picture I had come across, the bow is actually slightly behind the headset, so I just bobby-pinned the bow in place behind the headset.

Q.: You made this tutorial for the twins' headsets. Can I use it for (insert other Vocaloid)? Or can you make a tutorial for (insert other Vocaloid)'s headset?
A.: I made this tutorial since I was already making the headset for Rin. While I'm sure you can use this tutorial as a basis for the other Vocaloids, I don't have any plans on making different tutorials for the different headsets.

Hope you enjoy!

Hey =] Great tutorial!! I have a few questions...

1. Would you rather get clay that is oven-baked or air dried? (If I am unable to get "model magic clay")
2. Do you recommend a frame for the clay when building it? (Like using a small mesh wire to form the shape and use the clay over the mesh to create the shape) I know you didn't use one in this tutorial but do you think it would be beneficial for this project?
3. Can this clay be easily painted on? (Because we need ours to be black for our Miku cosplay)

Oh and thank you =] hope you answer this soon!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SailorAnime In reply to AnimeReoku [2010-08-03 02:01:21 +0000 UTC]

1. Probably oven-bake since air dry clays tend to be a bit flakier in my experience (though I might just be using bad quality ones).
2. Since you'd probably be using oven baked clay, I don't think a wire frame would be necessary; but if you go the air dry clay route, yeah, add a wire frame in.
3. Yes. It is easy to paint. I actually also used this clay for a Haku mask (Naruto) for a friend and the paint worked great. you just may want to prime it before actually painting it. A basic sealer should work fine. ^^

Hope that helps!

whats model magic? is it some kind of clay? if it it. wont it be fragile and heavy? o.o

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SailorAnime In reply to hatsu-san [2010-08-02 17:16:20 +0000 UTC]

Model Magic is an air-dry clay type thing, but what makes it awesome for things like this is the fact that it is lightweight and durable. I've used it a lot for various projects (most recently being my pauldron for my Lightning costume) and as long as you treat it with care (i.e. don't pile a whole bunch of stuff on top of it, step on it, what have you), it hold's up great.

SailorAnime In reply to mewdool23 [2010-07-27 23:01:06 +0000 UTC]

Um, the only advice I can think of specifically for Luka would be for the headband part. Try finding a plain black headband then adding some smooth gold cording on top of it.

So when the clay bits dry and harden do I stick the mic and ear pieces together or should I be doing this before? o.o When it's solid can you get the mic's wire into the ear piece? This is an awesome tutorial by the way. *0*

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SailorAnime In reply to shadownater [2010-07-27 03:18:15 +0000 UTC]

You put the wire through the ear piece once everything's dry. If you do it while it's still drying, it might stretch the earphone. ^^

awsomness on the cosplay at the end! And the head phones look great! But I have a question about the mic part, can u bend it when the clay dries? (sorry I'm not the best with model magic.)

SailorAnime In reply to DarkBlazingMoon [2010-07-17 06:12:07 +0000 UTC]

No, once the clay dries, it's pretty solid. But it takes around 24 hours to fully dry.

i'm probably going to do this for my rin cosplay, but i have a question....

how did you get the bow attached? is it just glued on, and does the bow need wires to stand up?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SailorAnime In reply to benikokoro [2010-06-20 00:11:01 +0000 UTC]

It's actually not attached to my headband; I keep it on with a couple of bobby pins. And it doesn't have wire in it (though that was an option I thought of). I managed to get it to stay up with just interfacing.

Thank you sooo much, this was the part I've been worrying the most about for my Rin cosplay. Just wondering, about how much money did the materials cost you? I want to make sure I have enough before I go out shopping for them.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SailorAnime In reply to animeblackfox [2010-06-15 00:24:22 +0000 UTC]

Uh, the Model Magic in the big tubes is $20 but in smaller tubes it's less than $10, the craft foam is $1-2 dollars a sheet, the headband is around $5, the wire was $5 or so, and the glue was around $7 (I think). I just had a lot of this stuff so I don't know exact prices.

How do you go about making Rin's ribbon on her headset as well as attaching it to the headband

Also, how do you attach everything together and put it on the headband XD;?
(Sorry, I'm a total noob at this ;[

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SailorAnime In reply to Koreataly [2010-06-09 15:44:50 +0000 UTC]

The bow was was essentially just a long hexagon that I gathered in the center. I just used some interfacing in it. And actually I didn't attach it to the headset since (in most of the reference pictures that I could find at least) her bow is a little bit in front of the headset; so, the bow is just bobby pinned on.

If you wanted to attach it, hot glue or something like that would work just fine. As far as attaching everything else, I'm not too sure what exactly you mean, but how to assemble the headset itself should be in the tutorial. The mic is attached by wire and the earphones are attached by glue.

Hope that helps some.
