Description Here is my tutorial on how to make a clip-on ponytail. This method looks best for either stubbed wigs or short wigs that end near the natural hairline. If you have any questions or need me to clarify something, post a comment or send me a note and I'll be happy to get back to you.
Here is what the inside of the clip looks like:

could you possibly post like a quick mspaint kinda thing that just shows the lines where you sew the wefts onto the piece of fabric? when i tried this, the wefts just hung down and pulled the fabric down with them and basically show the underside of the fabric along with the weft seam.

I'm having a little trouble understanding how the clip is hidden. I understand the one part going into the wig, but what about the part you pinch to open the clip? Sorry if this is obvious.

The felt sleeve goes right over that part. You pinch the clip through the felt and wefts to attach it to the wig.

Would something like this help with making a wig into a ponytail? I'm making a Megura cosplay from Disney Hercules. And I need to find a way to turn a wig into a ponytail.

This tutorial is really about making a ponytail from spare wefts. I would recommend Kukkii's tutorial on making a wig into a ponytail. www.cosplay.com/photo/1856065/

Can I buy a long wife and cut it short and make my own wefts? Also, is it possible to add a hairpiece similar to Korra's from The Legend of Korra?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Katsumiyo In reply to catpins [2013-08-03 05:50:15 +0000 UTC]

You can make your own wefts, but it is very complicated and extremely messy. I don't know what Korra's hair looks like very well. You could use bobby pins or something to pin up the strands to make those loop things, but I do not advise connecting them permanently to the ponytail. Your wig will be almost impossible to store that way.

How well do clip on ponytails actually work? I've never tried to do one, this is the first I've seen of them to be honest. I tried just pulling the wig into a high ponytail and it just does not stay put throughout a whole day and the only other thing I had seen other than this was putting in a fake one over a bit a foam. I'm not too keen on that idea.

Katsumiyo In reply to Kira-Kat [2013-04-23 07:29:30 +0000 UTC]

I guess I'm confused by what you mean by work? The clips are latched into the wefts and tracks on the wig, so unless you make a ponytail so huge that the wig sags, it should stay put all day. It's definitely the easiest method to make a ponytail with, too, since you don't need to alter the base wig to make one.

amazing!!!!!! but i was curious does it matter what size and shape claw clip you use? like one thats bigger and shorter? or one thats a bit longer and curved? im still a bit new to these

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Katsumiyo In reply to KillrsRquiet [2013-01-29 02:39:57 +0000 UTC]

The clips I had were straight-sided rectangles, so nothing special going on there. If you used curved ones, they might hug the wig better, but you would have to accommodate for that when you pattern the front piece of the ear.

JesterCosplay [2013-01-11 00:08:01 +0000 UTC]

Just curious. With the glue is it going underneath the felt or sitting on top of the felt (cos that wouldn't stick to anything?). Maybe I just stupid

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Katsumiyo In reply to JesterCosplay [2013-01-12 08:33:59 +0000 UTC]

I guess I don't understand the question? It's not very specific. The first time you use the glue, you are gluing the top side of the felt (the side with the wefts) to another top side to form the pleat. The second time, you are gluing the underside of the felt (the side where you can't see the wefts) to the clip itself.

JesterCosplay In reply to Katsumiyo [2013-01-14 00:15:19 +0000 UTC]

This will be so super useful to me. I have a long red wig that is both too long for Komachi Onozuka cosplay and lacking in the necessary twintails.
With your tutorial, I can totally trim the wig to the right length and use the clippings to make pigtail clips!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Katsumiyo In reply to Sableneko [2012-10-20 05:22:11 +0000 UTC]

Glad to hear it! Just be very careful when you're trimming. It can be rather hard to get the right shape with a regular wig. Use lots of hot water as you go, and you might have to take out a few wefts.

excuse me, but do you know the color of the wig you used? im planning a winry rockbell cosplay and i think the color of the wig you used would be perfect

Katsumiyo In reply to strawberrysanddog [2012-08-06 02:57:02 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately, the wig I used has been discontinued. But a light blonde or platinum blonde from Arda would probably be fine

Katsumiyo In reply to yanda8 [2012-06-19 06:33:51 +0000 UTC]

These were from Cosworx, which turned into ShopCosplay. But nowadays, I buy all my wigs from Arda, so you can get a base wig and matching wefts there.

KayLingLing [2012-06-09 20:44:14 +0000 UTC]

Excellent!!

If I wanted to use this, but I don;t have pre-sewn wefts, what do I do? I need to make a pony tail out of wig offcuts, but I don't have the ability to sew the wefts myself... Do you think there's another solution? If there isn't, then how do I go about sewing wefts by hand?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Katsumiyo In reply to KayLingLing [2012-06-09 20:47:21 +0000 UTC]

I know a couple different ways to make wefts from loose fiber. There's the sewing way, and the no-sew way. Here's a photo tutorial for the sewing way:
[link]
And another for the new-sew wefts:
[link]
Depends on how much fiber you have, but I'd probably sew them to avoid extra bulk, or at least use sewn ones closest to the top of the clip.

Hey weird question but I wanted to make a three layered ponytail in three colours green (top, shortest colour), blue (middle, longer colour) and purple (bottom, slightly longer than blue)

I got the idea from this lovely art (not done by me) below:

[link]

I have a general idea where I'm getting the main wig, I just wondered if you knew how I could modify this tutorial to make what I need.

Thank you veeeeeery much for reading this and putting up this very helpful tutorial!

Katsumiyo In reply to DerpyFox110 [2012-03-23 20:06:03 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha! Heliturtle.
Anyways, all you'd need to do is sew in the wefts in that order! Purple on bottom first, then blue on top, then green above that. It might help to layer the wefts beforehand, so give the green and blue a bit of a trim, because it'll be considerably harder to layer by color after the ponytail's all together. You could also have a few layers of the ponytail mixed, so say, one line across could be half blue and then half green or such. After the episode with the young flyer's competition, Rainbow Dash became one of my favorites, so send me a link when you're done!

Oh awesome! You replied so fast! And that material stuff you're supposed to put as the same colour, should I just put that as black? I was originally planning on doing the wefts and cutting them so the greem is shorter than them all and then the purple and blue and similar length, like the blue is only slightly shorter? And also if the wefts aren't exactly sewn together, how do you sew them together? Because I'd imagine that would be difficult.

And Rainbow Dash is my favourite too (obviously) and I will definitely send you the end result!

Katsumiyo In reply to DerpyFox110 [2012-03-26 07:40:43 +0000 UTC]

I'd go with a dark blue, rather than black, for the felt. Black can be a little harsh if you're not using only dark colors. As for wefts, I myself prefer to buy pre-sewn ones, but if it's too late for that, here's a tutorial on how to sew wefts:

It's a photo tutorial, so just click the thumbnail beneath and left of the photo you start at.

I don't know if you're still trying to hunt down a good site to get the wigs from, but Arda has sets of wefts in tons of colors and lots of great wigs to choose from, too. :3
