Description
Be careful when downloading, because this is...gigantic.Finished my promised tutorial on how to make 3-dimensional animal ears. The craft foam and tinfoil ones are okay but I wanted something a little more realistic.
Important note: The base ears should look a little too small--once you add the fur, they will appear much larger. So be careful to avoid making ears exactly the size you want the first time around.
Feel free to comment or note/message me if you have any questions! Oh, and if you use this tutorial, please message me a link to a picture! I love seeing pictures. :3
Oh, and I totally take commissions on these little suckers, so if you run into a lot of trouble or just get lazy I'd be happy to whip some up for you. :3

In replace of hot glue, would super glue work?

I only have thin craft foam-will that work, or should I glue two pieces together? Also does the ear have a bottom?

Depending on how large your ears are, you may want to glue two pieces together, at least for the curved part that makes the back of the ear. There's no bottom on the ear; it's just hollow in there. Some people put felt or fleece on the underside, but I find that tends to interfere with how it conforms to the spherical shape of the head.

May I ask how big the ears are? Also, can you replace felt with the fuax fur/paper?

Katsumiyo In reply to PixelPal1131 [2014-10-28 05:58:40 +0000 UTC]
The ears are somewhere around 2.5" long at the base, if I recall that correctly. I didn't use felt, though, so I'm not sure what you're referring to. Do you mean the fleece? If so, fur should be fine. I would hesitate to use paper, since it's more prone to wrinkling/staining and won't hold up as well.

Awesome. We use the Neco Ears though pretty much but would like to learn to make our own custom ones.

I have a question. Does it matter what color you use for the crafting foam? I only have grey and want to make brown ears and don't have time or gas to make a trip to the store.

Katsumiyo In reply to nicemattersfirst [2013-12-20 19:31:58 +0000 UTC]
Not particularly. You can always use paint to change the color of the foam. It technically shouldn't be visible when you wear the ears, but I like to have my craft foam match just in case.

Katsumiyo In reply to Tygriess [2013-08-16 01:38:36 +0000 UTC]
It really does. I've tried a few different kinds of clips and these have inarguably had the most success staying attached to the ears and sitting stationary in the wig.

Hi! just wondering, would it be possible to wear without a wig?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Katsumiyo In reply to I-Lost-My-Way [2013-07-22 03:16:43 +0000 UTC]
I know you can mount them on a headband, but this specific method relies on having bands of wefts on which to rest the clip. So doing it this way requires a wig. Most cosplays look better with a wig--even when a character has the same hair color and length I do, I wear a wig because wigs are so much thicker and look better in photos.

I was actually asking because I'm looking for a way to make animal ears that I can wear for a party I have coming up. I don't have the money to get into cosplay, tbh. X)

If it's for a party, just glue them to a headband that matches your hair color. It's easy to just paint a headband with acrylic paint, then glue the ears to that.

I just used this to make my Jade Harley ears and they turned out adorable! I had to play with how to cut the faux fur, but I did eventually get them to work! I've got the E6000 drying right now and I can't wait to try them on! (Mostly cause con's tomorrow and why did I wait until today to do this sob) They look really cute. So thanks for making this tutorial. (Also I'm fairly sure hot glue guns are why most cosplayers cuss.)

Nice work! I'm glad they turned out nicely! It can be hard to cut the netting of the fur without cutting the actual fur on the other side. xD;

Thanks for this awesome tutorial! I had to get craft glue that dries like rubber instead of a hot glue gun and I used felt instead of fleece, but they still turned out great for a first attempt. It just meant I had to hold the pieces of foam together for a few minutes while I waited for it to dry xD Still, they were fun to make and the outcome is definitely rewarding.

I'm fairly confused on where I should glue the hairclip to the ear. it looks like you glued it to the front in the first picture with the clips, but in the last picture it looks like you might have glued them to the bottom of the ear. Where exactly did you glue the clips to, just so i can figure out where to glue mine?
Thanks for the tutorial, its really great!

Katsumiyo In reply to TheTrollWithTheHorns [2013-05-05 04:19:15 +0000 UTC]
It's on the bottom of the front triangle. You can see in the third picture from the bottom where it's glued. When gluing, make sure it's attached so that the open part of the clip will be pointed towards the top of your head and not the other way around.

What were the measurements you used for the triangles and the curved triangles? Just so i could get an idea
Thank you ^_^

Katsumiyo In reply to KirstyKat [2013-04-30 16:49:29 +0000 UTC]
The inside was somewhere around 2.5" on the new ones, which are slightly larger than these. I think the outside line was about 2.75", but my patterns are getting reorganized right now so I don't have the pieces in front of me to measure them. Somewhere around there should do it, though!
